Ex Volunteer Firefighters Accused of Arson

A Rockingham County grand jury will consider arson charges against two former New Market volunteer firefighters accused of setting several fires.

what is it with firefighters starting fires? and most of the time they are young or still kids. you never hear of rescue squad workers beating people so they have something to do.

They are bored. The problem is almost all volunteer departments do not require back ground checks or in depth interviews with people from there past. YOu r right they are kids that's why they should not be allowed to be around these depatments until they mature.

Don't require background checks? Actually most departments do require them. Some states have laws requiring departments to give background checks. and most of the people that commit these arson crimes have to previous history. They just get addicted to flame.

I mean have no previous history. so a background check wouldn't even help.

Hey Sean, I'm talking about intensive background checks. Calling friends, teachers, old roomates etc. I was a volly and my background check consisted of my friends I put on the app. Anyone can check previous criminal Hx. I'm talking about finding out what kind of person your allowing in your department. That takes time and effort two things most volunteer departments lack.

That could help. but i don't think friends and family and old roomates would really know if that person would do something like that or not. I doubt my old roomates even know my hobbies. Much less if fire gives me a thrill.

Most rural volunteer firefighters congragate at the firehouse and use them as social halls. Typically, in rural areas call volume is extremely low and to cause excitement, they go out and start fires and typically are the first to respond, to save the day..

Let's just go ahead and get of fire departments then. Since the public is so worried about two people that started fires amount the thousands of others, we might as well just close them all down. People can put out thier own fires and cut themselves out of cars!!
