What do you know about Charles Feldmann?
I just adopted a JRT bred by him.

... I manage a pet shop that carries Charles' puppies whenever we can get them - his availability is EXTREMELY limited! We find them to be some of the nicest (and healthiest) around, and they're always from AKC registered stock. Additionally, as well as being USDA licensed, he is visited annually by the AKC, which has its own more stringent policies.

That said, I've spoken to him personally several times in reference to availability of puppies but have never heard of him having any JRT's or any dogs other than various retrievers and the retriever/poodle mixes ... but I have total confidence in him, so much so that I hope to buy a dog for myself from a (fingers crossed) litter this summer.

I purchased a Golden Retriever puppy in Portland, ME and he was listed as the breeder. The broker was Hunte Corp. What does that tell you?

Pet Lady...Don't you think selling puppies for profit is wrong? Your puppies are supplied by a puppy-miller. I did research on him and found out he had 77 dogs on the premises at that time and had many violation.
Pet shops are not the way to go when looking for a dog. How about adopting one of the many homeless dogs in shelters? If you love dogs so much, why don't you try opening a shelter instead of making money off of them.

Meg,
When I purhased my pup from a pet shop 6 years ago I knew nothing about where they get their dogs. Investigated this breeder by contacting the Dept. of Agriculture. Found out some disturbing info.
Majority of puppy mills are located in the mid-west (MO, KS, etc.) If you would like more info, please contact me at sparkylight02@yahoo.com.

Pet Lady...
Did it ever occur to you that he is not just selling to your pet store and that is why there are few money-making puppies available? Did you purchase them from Hunte Corp or through him, personally. Let's see...your pet shop is located in NY and he is in MO. Why would he sell to you exclusively? How are the pups shipped? What is the average price of a pup purchased through him and what did you actually pay for it...In other words, what kind of profit do you make on each pup?

My JRT came to me via the Jack Russell Rescue. Her first family got her from a pet store where papers list Charles Feldman as breeder.
She is a great healthy dog.

When I get a request for one of Charles' dogs, I call his cell phone or his son Bryan's cell phone, and they tell me what pups will be available and when. When I buy one of his dogs, I make the check out to Charles Feldmann personally - not to a broker.
We sell puppies because people want to buy them, and are not interested in adopting. I understand that the Feldmanns breed their dogs for profit, and if that makes them a puppy mill then that's what they are.
We find that pups from professional (I.e., commercial) breeders (like the Feldmanns) are more reliable, healthwise, than those from local breeders who know nothing about the genetic history of their pets and little about animal husbandry.
We strive to provide quality puppies in compliance with the stringent "pet store lemon laws" in our state, and dealing with the likes of the Feldmanns permits us to do just that.

Then you are no better than he is...making profit on puppies. Have you ever checked out his inspection reports? If you have, I don't think you would be purchasing puppies from him. PET SHOPS ARE JUST AS BAD AS PUPPY MILLS!

OK, Pet Lady...I am really starting to get annoyed with you. Wow, you have Feldmann's cell phone #, but you don't know how to request an inspection report? Seems to me that a pet shop would want to know what kind of facility their puppies came from...no, all that matters is they are cute and in demand and that ='s $$$$$$$$$.
You can go to petshoppuppies.com and fill out all the information on one of Feldmann's puppies...don't forget to include the name of your pet shop!(which I would LOVE to have)!!! AND you can go to savepuppymilldogs.com and you will see a report of Puppies of Westport and mentions Feldmann's name. Is that the pet shop you manage?
I did request inspection reports from petshoppuppies.com and here is a little from the report: Section 3.11 The water bowls have a greenish growth and have chewed edges. These water bowl must be cleaned and sanitized properly and the owner must repair/replace them. This affects 67 adult dogs. Excreta and food waste must be removed from primary enclosures daily and from under primary enclosures as often as necessary to prevent excessive accumulation of feces and food waste, to prevent soiling of the dogs or cats contained in the primary enclosures, and to reduce disease hazards, insects and pests and odors. Section 3.4(b)(4) Inside, several dog houses that do not have bedding inside. The ambient temp is 32 degrees F. Need to provide dry clean bedding to protect the health and well-being of the canines. Item affects 20 canines.
So Pet Lady, I am anxious for you to divulge what pet shop you manage if you are not too ashamed!

Pet Lady...a little about me. I lost my Mom and then 3 weeks later I lost my 11 year old Alaskan Malamute. I decided to get another pup because I had alot of love to give. Went to various shelters in the area but just wasn't ready. A few months later I was shopping in the mall and went inside a pet store looking at all of the cute puppies. Please keep in mind that this is back in 2002 and I have never even heard the words puppy mill. I saw this very adorable puppy, a Golden Retriever, and asked the clerk if I could hold him. Well, it was all over...I fell in love and so did he. We went into the office and went over all the paper work, breeder Charles Feldmann and broker Hunte Corp., paid the $1,000 and walked through the mall he "Sparky" started coughing. Didn't think much of it. We got in my truck and headed up to Maine to visit my daughter. He fell asleep with his head on my lap. While going through a toll booth, the lady who was taking the toll said "Ahhhh, I can tell that no harm will ever come to this puppy"!
When I got back home, I made an appointment with a vet. He was still coughing and sneezing. Found out he had kennel cough, and also worms, and a mild heart murmur.
OK, he was treated for the worms and kennel cough, but had to get a sonogram for the heart murmur. At about 9 months, he started having seizures. After visiting many vets, there was still no conclusion on the cause.
He was smart, bright, and funny! But with all of his health issues, I started researching on the internet...that's how I found out about puppy mills. It really sickened me so I went to petshoppuppies.com and filled out all of the information and found the report on his breeder. I am now a voice for those puppies in puppy mills and campain against those who make profit from them INCLUDING pet shops!
Sparky was diagnosed with Lymphoma in the fall of 2005 and died Feb. 1, 2006...one week after his fourth birthday. Chemotherapy could not save this dog that I loved with all my heart. I now have another Golden Retriever which I adopted. I will never set foot in a pet shop again, knowing where these dogs come from, how they are treated and WHY THEY ARE HERE!

Here's another good website: www.stoppuppymills.com . Be sure to click on the pictures. I am sure Feldmann is not the only miller that provides you with pups. Check out what a typical puppymill looks like. If you care anything about animals, you will quit your job and maybe work for the Humane Society!

I thought I had responded to all this days ago.

I can tell you feel passionately about this, and of course I am sorry about your dog and your experience.
Unfortunately, the issues you had with your dog could have come up in any dog, regardless of the source. Any time puppies are socialized with one another, they are placed at risk for kennel cough and intestinal parasites, as these are highly communicable. Fortunately, these are generally easily treated, especially when they're caught early. Since the breeder of your dog routinely provides several wormers, our case, it is likely that these were acquired in transit or at the shop where you purchased the puppy.
As for your dog's terminal illness - while some issues may run in certain lines of dogs, a genetic basis for such diseases is not well understood.
However, I do not believe that lymphoma can be attributed to algae in water bowls or poopy kennels.
Perhaps a letter to the breeder to inform him of what you believe to be a congenital defect in his breeding stock would be in order.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your response. My intent was not to seek pity...I do not blame the breeder for my dog's illness. My dog's illness led me to be informed about puppy mills. Searching the internet informed me about the horrific conditions that these dogs suffer and I was sad to learn that this is how my dog started his life.
I am trying to share information that I have learned about pet shops and puppy mills. I truly believe that you think (or thought) that you were providing your customers with puppies that were cared for and breed with care and love from Charles Feldmann. I only hope that you have looked into the websites that I have posted and, more importantly, his inspection reports.
Unfortunately, the only reason that his puppies are difficult to come by is because he sends the majority to Hunte Corporation. As far as the AKC visiting him...they make alot of money on puppy mills and the fact that they visited him personally, disturbs me.
If you would like to email me personally to discuss this further, my email address is sparkylight02@yahoo.com.

I found this lively debate while searching on Feldmann.

Sorry pauly, but the pup I purchased is fantastic and I get compliments all the time about how wonderfully she represents the Black Lab breed.

I was originally looking to adopt but honestly fanatics who told me what I should want and whether I was "worthy" to own a dog, turned me away.

I am not the only one who has had this experience.

So happy that your dog is fantastic and how many compliments you get on her, but so sorry you don't care about where she came from and the many dogs just like her. Did you check out the websites I posted about puppymills? If not, please do.
Those "fanatics" are ANIMAL ADVOCATES. If they didn't feel you were "worthy" enough to adopt, you probably weren't. You see, these advocates aren't interested in your money like pet stores are...just want to make sure these animals are placed in a safe and secure environment which you obviously could not provide.
People like you are the reason puppymills and pet stores thrive, for they could care less where these dogs are placed and what happens to them. All they care about is money.
