I am a former Illinois state scholar and am now on food stams, so stressed I now smoke a few cigarettes a day for stress. I haven't had a full time job for over a decade but a lot of scoffs and accidents.
Hope to leave the state soon and USA.

if you have one because you need it and you actully use it correctly then thats fine but its the people who lie to get one then trade 80 bucks of food money for 20 bucks cash so they can go buy alcohol that are wrong. its sad because theres people who really need food and the people who are doing wrong with the cards are going to ruin it. i just wish people would stop abusing things. its not funny or cool if you need alcohol to make it through your day go get a job and work and make the money dont use a damn food card. i heard something about that cash help that also comes on a food card that people can go withdraw it from the machine and go and buy whatever they want. people lieing to get it saying their children have no diapers or clothes and then going and buying drugs with the money they get. it really makes me mad and sad.
its not 20 its 40 lol

I don't live in a "home", and I don't have a stove. If it wasn't for the time I spend at the library, I wouldn't be on the internet either. I get disability - because I worked all of my life until I had serious health problems that made it impossible for me to do so. I don't get enough on disability to have a proper "home" with a stove, but yet the state tells me that I "make too much money" to get a LINK card. Really??? How is that?? Less than $800/month to pay rent on the one room dive where I lay my head to sleep, pay for all of my many many medications, plus my other bills (and no, I don't have a cell phone or any type of TV service), yet I make too much to get any help buying food. Instead, I live on cheap corn flakes, rice, eggs, and milk. Yet I see people in the store buying steaks, soda, and all sorts of other things that I consider LUXURIES. Boy, isn't that nice?? Makes me feel real good about having worked all of my life to support people like that, and now I can't even get the help I so desperately need.

All that with crooks like Jim devine making over $120,000 per year for NOT doing his job. He's not the only one, but is the worst. I am there - hang in there. critics of honest people like you and me are everywhere with nothing better to do than slander and attack. How pathetic.

Illinois switch to the link card because of the illegal use of foodstamps. Now it is also used to buy beer and cigs by trading for cash? Why did they even change it? I was a single mother and I worked 40 hours a week but still got food stamps to help with the feeding of my 3 kids. I get them now because I am disabled and get barely $700 a month. I WOULD NEVER SELL THEM FOR ANYTHING ELSE!Its crap that the ones doing this make those who do need them look bad. Thanks alot low lifes. How dare you take food out of your child's mouth to buy cigs and beer. You make me sick!

some of these comments are just horrible on here.
just because someone gets food stamps does not mean they get cash FACT you cant get cash haven't been able to for over 15 years ! the only time someone gets cash is when they are medically unable to work or they have just had a baby and only for up to the first year ! you losers should do some homework before you open your mouths. as for why ill is so broke .. ask your governor .... ask rod, and dont forget ask geo .. who we are now paying for him to go live in a half way house . this states wastes way too much money on stupid court cases . and allow governors like geo . to put 163 family members on the payroll , thats ok but someone trying to fed their kids is wrong wake up grow up get a freaking clue !

If someone qualifies for cash assistance it's on their LINK card and from what I understand can be used for purchasing anything but alcohol and tobacco products. Unfortunately, I'm sure there are ways around that too. For instance, I was behind a woman at DG that had all food items. Apparently the cashier hit the wrong key and it took it off of her cash assistance amount instead of her LINK amount. The woman realized it before she left the store and made them void the sale, ring it up again and take it off of her LINK. There's no way to put it back on the card, so the cashier handed her the cash... I don't know if the woman knowingly let it go through that way or if maybe the woman and the cashier were friends and the cashier did it that way on purpose to help her out... all I know is that there are flaws in any system and this is one of them.

You can actually look it up on the website yourself too... here's the link. It's self explanatory and you don't have to have your card number.

Shame on all of you who wrongly use your Link Card. That money is given to you by the state to help feed you and your family until you are able to do it on your own. You should be out looking for jobs rather than asking individuals for money in exchange for your Link. It is wrong that my tax money has to go to individuals who do not want to help their selves. It disgusts me to know that I work hard day after day to provide Link for individuals who abuse it.

First off, you cant just "lie" to get a link card. Household income, family members and all check stubs are reported and kept track of. You are only allowed to get cash 60 months a lifetime..so a few years if you have a baby or have a disability and even then they have to do community services and recieve much less than minimum wage, and its not meant to support you Its nothing anyone can live off. I know women that have been on it. I recieve link and have two small children and work and it still isnt enough! One income on minimum wage is not enough to support my kids and theres something wrong with the system if I work 40 hrs and still can barely get by. Alot of the programs they put in place are for young mothers. TANF is a cash program. "Temporary assistance for needy families". There are women who are on it and eventually get degrees and go on to be very successful. Times are tough people, for EVERYBODY.

The LInk card should be used to put food on the table for your kids and family if you are short on money...Should not be used in any restaurant or what ever...this is not what we tax payers pay for ...and nobody is entitled ...only folks who have no food...That is my Opinion...To many abuse the Opportunity of our country and this is why we are broke
