I went to the old Shelbiana Grade School for a year back in the early seventies when my Dad was transferred to the area....Just wondering: Is the old building still standing? I remember it being and old, prison looking structure of sandstone.
sure

it's still standing and probably as strong as ever, just needs lots of work... adkins beside there thought he bought all the pieces of property,so he boarded up windows and doors only to find out he didn't own that particular piece. it can only be bought if it will be used as a school according to old deeds.
you would think someone would put a private school, an animal type training center or any kind of something in order to get federal and state monies for restoring historic landmarks...
i thought about it, but don't know anyone to help me with this endeavor...
yes, she is still standing proud!

im not sure of the opening date but my mom went there too when she was growing up. i was born in 71 so she was there in the 60's. i do remember how unique it was. my daughter actually said she drove up there a few days ago.

the school opened in the late 30s not the 70s. I think it was 1936 there use to be a plaque on the front of the building telling about it but it had came off the buildings years before it closed and was stored in the library.

thanx, LOL.....i knew it was very old when i went there....i remember the library well....and the principals office!!!

so the gist is someone "bought" it but the old deeds prohibit using it for anything other than a school??....did i read that correctly?

johnsons bought it... couldn't use it...deed keeps this school as a school if it is ever transferred. must be used as a school.
if anyone was smart...you could put in a dog obedience school, a private school, or any type of "school". federal funding for restoring a historic landmark, and state or whatever funding for the "school" part. have cafeteria downstairs and believe me, people would come...
this would be a great boost and a wonderful thing to do for the old school. i still have some more stone if need-be, but i think the exterior is fine, just needs the boards off the windows and doors which were put there by someone who doesn't own the building, but i can see the reason for it.

over the hill form the school. the "happy pappy's" worked at it with mules and manual labor. those are some hue stones too. happy pappy's being the wpa or work program enacted way back then.

Sloopy did not state which 1, the old building that strong winds tore down, or the school house that was rebuilt. So, I gave what i knew on the newer 1 :-P....

i think the wind tore down the Greasy Creek school, which isn't even close to the shelbiana grade school on schoolhouse hill. strong winds would never knock it down i can almost guarantee.
