Monterey would be wise to abandon the Southern Berkshire Regional School District entirely.
For the money paid to the district, Monterey could get a much better deal educating its own kids.
Further, there would no longer be any need for time and fuel wasted commuting the many miles each day to Sheffield.
It's no wonder so many in Monterey have already opted out of SBRSD in favor of private education and home schooling.

Saw all of five kids in the playground at the Monterey School last week. It would be cheaper to send the kids to Harvard, than continue keeping one room schoolhouses open.

Part of the reason so few kids are in the Monterey School's yard is that many locals opt to homeschool or to send their kids to the area's private schools rather than deal with the inept school system run by SBRSD.
Can you blame them?

Monterey is currently using a voucher program where weekend residents may "school home" their children.

Under the "school homed" program, part-time residents can leave their kids at the Monterey school around-the-clock from Monday morning through Friday Friday afternoon.

If you send kids to Harvard, they go nuts like Amy Bishop. That's a known fact.

That's not true, ask Ted 'Unabomber' Kaczynski.

this is nothing more than egremont holding SBRSD hostage yet again. break up the regional school districts, let the larger towns run their own schools and then these smaller towns that choose to discriminate against the young people with their zoning by-laws can send whatever youngsters are left to wherever they wish on a tuition basis. this will bring fiscal responsibility back to town run schools. what kind of a district is it anyway when the tax burden is not shared equally but those that pay less want the same input ? the old saying "put up or shut up" seems appropriate.

Don't you mean to say that it's Sheffield holding the district hostage?

this town vs. town nonsense will never end until a real district is created.

SBRSD is a money-wasting inept joke.
Hopefully, Monterey will come to its senses and pull out of the district entirely.
