First,we as parents need to start being held accountable for our children and their actions...Then we need to get back to that 'ole school mentality "it takes a village to raise a child"...We need to get involved in our neighborhoods and with the children that live in them...As parents' we need to stop going off on other neighbors when they tell us something our children are outside doing, children will not be angels when they are out and about with their lil friends...And some of you know this, but just wont admit it...I think if we just start first in our homes, then in our neighborhoods we'll have a fighting chance...The majority of these children just need someone to show them that they are worthy, they just need a lil love...I promise you'll be amazed at how you'll see the difference and changes these children go thru once someone just stops long enough to show them they care...I see it everyday, and it's a remarkable sight to behold...

Youth violence is nothing new, it has been highlighted by the recent Chicago death Derrion Albert. Video on World wide TV may have lost Chicago it's 2016 Olympic bid. Their are existing federal programs for youth through the Department of Agriculture in every State and territory called 4H. 4H has been a Federal program since 1913, most think of it as an ag program, but 4H after school programs have and can work in urban environments. They work through the State and territory university extension services. They should be funded to help these kids with school homework, keep them off the street and out of trouble etc..

mzjay.... your right it does take a parent to know what their kids are doing, i remember in 1995 a kid was 14 in the system and removed out of his home , and placed in a boys home , he ran off from it , was found shot to death in a dope house , his mom was raising hell saying the system failed him .... come to find out his mom failed him , had him selling crack at the age of 11 on the streets and when he went to live with grandma , she couldnt handle him , when he ran off from the boys home , he went to the dope house his mom hung out at ....some parents like to give their teenagers to the system to raise instead of them doing the job.i raised teenagers and i know its not easy , but they growup and than the love from them is returned to the parents . i cant understand when a teenager gets kinda wild , the parents run him to the mental hosp. and they are put on pscyh. meds .......they screw with a kids mind in the end..... i hear parents of the very young saying , my 2 yr old is wild , the doc. said they will put them on meds to calm them down when they alittle older .... its true cause they said that about my 2 yr old grandkid .... doc. brainwash the parents into thinking their kids need meds to calm down ........i told my kid , he will regret it someday if he does and why does he want a zombie .......

Many of the violence going on in this city is because of money and black market drugs.
Time to end the failing "drug war". Please have some compassion for those who are sick and need medical marijuana. Please visit: http://ssdp.org/index.php (student group) http://www.mpp.org (washington group) http://www.leap.cc (Police for decriminalization) |

Alcohol in the home is vexing on many families. Why do we drive people to drink over such a dangerous drug like alcohol. Alcohol is THE Gateway drug. not marijuana |

To say violence in teenages hasn't increased is taking a blind side view of things. It is what it is. I grew up in the 60's my teenage years and there just wasn't the kind of violence we have today. I grew up in old northeast K.C. it was truely a good place to live. Kids played and walk anywhere they wanted to with out worry. I wouldn't walk down the street there now for nothing. As K.C, has grown the crime has grown, and the violence has increase 10 fold. Yes we would fight as teens, but we left the guns out of it. I'm in no way for gun control. But there has to be a way to stop the killing. I'm in my late 50's now and live in Dexter, Mo. the crime and violence is here too, just not as much. It's the culture that's been bread by something we all have in our homes, the TV.
