People need to remember to take responsibility. I do drive occasionally, I do take a drink occasionally, and I do carry a handgun occasionally. What I practice without fail is to NOT drink and dive, and NOT drink while I am armed. This is a no brainer. It is not asking too much of people to take responsibility and NOT drink and drive and NOT drink and be armed. I believe that when the certainty of punishment is increased, drunk driving and its tragic consequences will diminish.

As stated by Beachnative this is a very hurtful subject. Even thou it has been 9 years the heart ache is as fresh as if it were yesterday. Because of the families involved I will try and choose my words carefully and with compassion for all. As we pass the crosses so loveingly cared for we will remember the Gems and their parents. Visit
http://www.preciousgemsmemorial.com/ to see how the Gems are being remembered and the good things that are done in their memory to help others.
About Missy. I met Missy when I along with other members of my Church visited Manteo Jail. We held Bible Study and Prayer twice a month. Not knowing who she was or why she was there she touched my heart. Before meeting here I had no sympathy for drunk drivers and had even stated she is a murderer, lock her up for ever. Meeting her and seeing a young girl (who could have been my daughter) I realized she did not get up one morning plan to hurt any one. It was an accident and if no alcohol had been involved it most likely would have been called an accident. If there is any one here that drinks have you ever had a drink or two and driven a car. At some time in your life could this have been you? 60 years will never bring back the Gems and no amount of time will make up for what happen but I feel she should be given a second chance and be eligible for parole.
I became friends with Missy and a web site was formed to help her with appeals. Let me tell you a little about her. She helps teach other inmates to read and write so they will have a chance to make it when they are released. She has many supporters on the site who at times send her money and gifts. She has requested that we send the money and other things to inmates who have no family or friends, she always shares every thing she has. She works in the prison as a representative of Visit NC and has even recommended my business when asked for certain type of accommodations.I know she has written letters to friends warning them of the evils of alcohol, drinking and driving. I have hear reports from people from this area who have served time in Raleigh how Missy went out of her way to help them to stay straight and never return to Raleigh. Missy is a wonderful girl who I am proud to call my friend. She try's every day to do a good deed and will never forget the Gems. She has stated that whether free or locked up she will all ways be a prisoner to the knowledge that she took the lives of 4 wonderful girls. The punishment that she imposes on her self is more than the prison system can do. For those of you that have sons or daughters that might make a mistake and drink and drive PRAY for Missy and her family and the Gems family as we never know when we might be in their shoes. I Pray that some day she will be FREE as I know she would be an asset to the community.

One more thing if Dare County Court System had of convicted her of prier DUI instead of reducing it and given her jail time before this MAY BE just maybe she would have thought twice before taking a drink and driving. I see in the paper they are still turning people loose with a slap on the hand. Did they not learn any thing from this Horrible accident.

I was a friend of Missy's all those years ago, I still think of her often and miss her smile and laugh. The way I see it there were 5 victims that day as Missy certainly lost her life too. I don't mean to lessen the loss of the families of the girls that passed that day I know first hand how bad it was - I was there. It still haunts me when I let it.

missy has a web site, can you share that? I would love to drop her a line

"trying to find the truth"
I am sure that Missy is Ok, I received a note from her approx. 2 months ago. I do know that one of her friends in Raleigh did pass and it truly hurt Missy and others. Also the one boy who was very close to Missy and kept the Missy Forum going passed away about a year ago. He lived in the Northern beaches. I have noticed a few of missy's friends have posted here, if any one would like to contact her you can email me at goodtimesOBX@aol.com.

Personal responsibility and accountability really HAS been trashed, hasn't it? Let's not forget who the realy victims are, and who made the decision to drink and drive. Do the courts share responsibility? Sure. But getting arrested should have been her wakeup call, regardless of what the courts did with it. This was not an "accident" but a wreck that resulted from a repeat, calculated, drunken decision.

Saying "if alcohol wasn't involved this would have been an accident" is ludicrous, and an insult to the memories of those murdered by a drunk driver. That's a pretty substantial "IF." In reality, alcohol WAS the proximate cause of the wreck. That cannot be disregarded or swept away. Let's not revise the past reality to suit bleeding hearts who want to paint the offender as a primary victim. Her humanity is not forgotten, but forgiveness doesn't trump justice.

I still don't understand throughout all these years they still aren't very strict on people that drink and drive around this area. Why?? I know alot of people come here to party, but that shouldn't be the reason why there is lessened restriction.

If one chooses to drink, they should not drive. Use a designated driver. Take responsibility for your actions. Want to save money? Why spend your money in a bar? If you are a tourist, buy your beverage of choice and take it back to your unit. If you live here do the same, buy it to go and take it home. This stuff is not hard.

What, exactly, do you propose M.M. is a victim of? A victim of her own bad decision making? Perhaps a victim of circumstance? Or maybe a "victim" in the sense that had the system been sufficiently rigorous in discipling her the prior occasions she might have learned her lesson and not made this final fatal mistake?

Well, M.M. got quite a statement from Judge Tillett in his sentencing and it was as clear a signal as could be sent to the rest of the community that drunken driving would be dealt with harshly. Has that sixty year sentence slowed down the incidents of DWI in our community? Hardly. The crosses remain at Colington road as a reminder of that tragic day; a reminder to anyone who might decide they are okay to drink and dive. We can't know how many people see those reminders and make the "right" decision. We can't know how many decide risking 60 years of their life sitting in prison isn't worth the gamble. Clearly, there are many who do not.

Melissa is where she should be. She will die in prison, just as she caused the death of 4 girls. I'm thinking about sending her a calendar every year with a big red 'X' on the day she committed the murders.

The last two posts, particularly, remind me why I don't like most people.

Idiots.

My dog has more integrity and intelligence than most of the people who post on this forum.

At least it's good for a laugh, though.

Personal insults on the internet. Oh my.
Obviously you have never lost someone on the highway due to a drunk driver. I have. Get back with me when you have lost a family member due to the selfishness of a drunk driver who thinks they are the only one that matters and can do what the hell they want to on the highway. She committed a CRIME that killed 4 people. She is a criminal. I hope she stays healthy and has a long life behind bars. I hope she never sees or smells the ocean again. I hope the only surfing she will ever do is in her mind. The outer banks are safer without her.

I don't see anything "mean" about Beachbum's stating his opinion - an opinion which I can certainly understand as he states that he's lost someone to a drunk driver.

I'll wager that you think that you're ok to drive after having a couple beers......probably young and dumb..... sorry about the name calling but that's what I think of your post :-)

Whoever keeps saying Melissa Marvin killed herseld needs to SHUT THE FCUK UP. What proof do you have to even start that rumor? You're a stupid mother fcuker who only needs to speak of things they know. Also, i'd like to give a great big "FCUK YOU" also to anyone who give their opinion on Missy's case. I'd like you to know that nothing about the results of the incident were "right" or "just". It was a lose lose situation for both parties. Mellisa cannot be punished for her actions. Well, she can be but not by man. Nobody will ever make her feel as bad as she makes herself feel daily. So keep you're "anit-drinking and driving" comments to yourselves. What good do they do? Do you feel better about yourselves because you don't do it? Or because you advocated to the public that its wrong? Like everyone who drinks and drives doesn't already know that its wrong. Its wrong. Bad. It deservese a pinnishment, of course....but is stagnating the life of the convicted going to bring back the lives of the victiams? No. Their families will hurt just as much.

How does a drunk person that can't reason because they're so drunk, know that he/she is too drunk to drive?

I use to drink and drive when I was younger and vividly remember leaving the bars and drivig with one eye shut so I wouldn't see double. I never got pulled over and thakfully, I never killed anyone although I'm pretty sure I could have.

It has been my personal decision for years to not drive if I have had even one drink. Because again, how many is too many? A shot of tequila and one beer can get one person smashed, while another can have several drinks and appear sober.

I'm sure this woman suffers every day - but she like myself and so many others made the decision to drink and drive. It was her misfortune and that of those four lovely girls that it ended in tragedy. I consider myself lucky.
