ask the Minnesota Nurses Association - who recently held a strike for "patient safety".

ask their unions as well as the HR at the hospitals: MNA states it violates their privacy & their rights. The Hospitals claim it's too costly. I worked in another state at a hospital that DID randomly test their big deal..I'm all for it.

The ones that have been caught stealing drugs for self-use or have problemsw/ alcohol (the 1st time) are told to go to rehab then must participate in a 3-5 year "diversion program": HPSP. It includes random urine tests, a worksite monitor, counseling & AA/NA attendence w/ a sponsor. Amongst other safety measures. This must be done by ANY chemically dependent licensed health professional - that their boards are made aware of, at least: MD, RN, DDS,Psycologist, EMT, etc. IF they wish to keep their license. If they relapse, w/ stealing, especially, the Nursing Board slaps an immediate suspension on their license for around 2yrs & they cannot work. The Medical Board is a bit more "liberal" on the MDs. Doing random checks BEFORE it gets to this point should be considered. There are A LOT more out there that haven't made the media...just my ten cents.

Nurse who is pro-testing wrote:
I am a nurse and I agree, I'm shocked at how easy it would be to steal drugs. Yes, eventually the nurse would get caught but not before harming other patients. I would be for random drug testing in the work force. Facilities will enforce an immediate drug test if they suspect something but by then it's too late. Background checks are great, but every offender has a first time.
my next door neighbor is a RN and also a pot head. She is very nice, I enjoy having her for a neighbor HOWEVER I would never want her for my nurse. She smokes pot on a daily basis, heck I see her many times doing it. She loves to party all the time, besides working, that is what she lives for....yet, she is handing out meds, taking care of sick people, ETC , all the while she could never ever pass a UA, so what gives? Again, almost all companies today require randoms and why the health profession does not just blows my effing mind. You would think they should be at or near the top of the list.

Hello Minnesota Board of Nursing---WTF I know of a nurse that was taking a drug from a resident in a nursing home last October and she still has her MN License. It was reported to the state right away. Get off your ass and do something about this, WHY is it taking so long?
