Do you recommend an alternative place in Kern County? It sounds as though my son would be worse off after attending Teen Challenge. I am a "christian" but my son doesn't even believe in the validity of the Bible and he is on a really bad path. I would not be able to send him to such a hypocritical place. His behavior is worse than the typical 15 year old limit testing (drinking alcohol, smoking, ditching school) and he was caught shoplifting alcohol today. It was his reaction that impacted us, or the lack thereof. "I am NOT being arrested"....more or less another "so what are you gonna do about it"?. We have done everything we can for the past 2 years and are on the verge of completely giving up. Our other 3 kids are suffering as well. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks for having the courage to write that article. I wish you the best.

Teen Challenge in Kern County does not take minors, only adults. 75% of Teen Challenge facilities are for adults.

Give these people a try. They may be able to guide you to a juvenile facility:

http://www.californiadrugrehabs.org/californi...

http://www.teensavers.com/residential-program...

The Bible will not help him stop what he is doing. He needs to be guided by a firm yet gentle professional hand. All Teen Challenge would do is threaten him with Jesus as if Jesus were a pit bull on a leash, then punish your son if he doesn't "speak in tongues" fast enough to suit them. Avoid Christian rehabs at all costs. You cannot pray addiction away any more than you can pray diabetes away. Both are medical conditions, they are not caused by "sin."

Thank you for your inquiry. You can email me at admin@teenchallengeexposed.com

Good luck to you and your son.

Let your son drink a beer. Talk to him as you would another individual. Be gentle and don't hide things from him. I had a 15 year old ganster stepson who loved to drink, he will be 18 in December and will be joing the United States air force. Continue to tell him you love him, there is no greater motivating force in life.

Good advice. Also buy your kids marijuana and take them to strip clubs. Keep them from hanging out with the brainy hooligans with their good grades and old money. Friends like that never come in handy. Encourage sex with multiple partners. Getting a girl pregnant is the way to be a man. Most of all, treat him like an equal. The last thing a teenager needs is an authority figure in his life.

I think you are seeing a lot of hogwash from 'failed' Teen Challenge students. My son went to Shafter for 3 months then 'graduated' to Riverside. Been clean for 2 years so far. Their approach works if you are open to change. It is a long, long way from Club Med. Strict rules, have to work and follow the rules. Shafter is a 3 month program to insure you are really ready to change your life. Then, on to Riverside for a longer program. More than 50% are kicked out or leave on their own as they aren't really ready.
PS I don't know where the money comments come from. Shafter doesn't charge a thing. Do they do fund raisers? Of course, but their thoughts are if you had to pay to get in, you'd more than likely spend it on drugs instead. There is a waiting list to get in.
One parents experience is it works if you are ready for some serious help.

all i have to say about the teen challenge program is that this program actually works, not like most of those other ones found in our communities. My brother tried other programs, and as soon as he got admitted to teen challenge, we could tell the difference in the way they are approached religiously, how they are shown disipline, and how they teach them that if they open up their hearts to god, to family, and to a life full of hope, change, and blessings, they can overcome their addictions. Besides them learning about god, they are also given the opportunity to get their g.e.d., since a lot of them have dropped out of school, or have gotten expelled because of their inclination to drugs and irresponsible behavior, in their teen years. They hear testimonies of other people who have come from even worser levels of addiction and self neglect, and yet they've been able to escape that life of misery. I will always reccomend this program to anyone who is an addict, or to any desperate family who just cant find a way to help their loved ones.

Ironically in high school I was both(except for the old money part). I got the partying, the grades, and the ladies.

Teen Challenge is great. I was hopelessly addicted to cocaine and went to a traditional rehab to no avail. I was using again before I left the 3 month program. I came to Teen Challenge SoCal in 2004 and everything changed. I have been clean now for 6 years - I am still involved in 12 step meetings, (no rivalry there for me) and am involved with Teen Challenge. Teen Challenge works, prayer works (even traditional programs emphasize prayer), and Jesus works - if I/you will let him work in my/your life.

YOU ARE A FOOL FOR EVEN TRYING TO MAKE SUCH FALSE ACCUSATIONS!! YOU PROBABLY FAILED THE PROGRAM BECAUSE YOU CHOSE TO NOT FOLLOW THE SIMPLE RULES.NEVER ONCE WAS I NOR ANYBODY ELSE FORCED TO SPEAK IN TOUNGES,THE ONLY THING THE ASK OF YOU IS TO STOP BEING A SELFISH ADOLESCENT, AND START BEING MAN!YEAH BEING FORCED TO BE RESPONSIBLE REALLY SUCKS,THE PART THAT SUCKS IS THAT ANOTHER MAN HAS TO CHALLENGE YOU TO DO IT BECAUSE WE AS ADDICTS CANT SEEM TO GROW UP AND DO IT OURSELVES!THE PROBLEM WITH YOU PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BASH THE PROGRAM IS THAT EITHER YOU, OR YOUR LOVED ONE WHO GOT KICKED OUT FOR SNEAKING A SMOKE OR RUNNING INTO TOWN TO BUY DRUGS OR ALCOHOL,PLACED YOU HOPE IN MEN AND INSTITUTIONS,WHICH BY THE WAY BOTH HAVE THEIR FLAWS, INSTEAD OF PLACING YOU FAITH AND HOPE IN THE LORD!OH I ALMOST FORGOT THAT SOME OF YOU BELIEVE THAT ITS SUCH CRAZY TO BELIEVE IN GOD,OR THAT PEOPLE CAN BE HEALED THROUGH PRAYER,OR THAT SOME"MYTHICAL BEING" CREATED THE EARTH. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!! BELIEVING THAT BY STICKING A NEEDLE INTO YOUR ARM,OR A PIPE UP TO YOU LIPS, A LINE UP YOUR NOSE,OR WASHING A HAND FULL OF PILLS DOWN YOUR THROAT WITH A BOTTLE OF JACK, TO EASE SOME EMOTIONAL/PHYISICAL PAIN, HIDE SOME GUILT,GET SOME COURAGE,OR HIDE FROM A PROBLEM IS DEFINITELY A WISER AND MORE LOGICAL WAY OF THINKING! MY LIFE WAS CHANGED BECAUSE WHILE I WAS IN THERE I DEALT WITH ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE AND RULES,BOTH GOD AND BAD,AND I ALLOWED GOD TO USE THEM AS SANDPAPER TO SMOOTH AWAY THE CRAP I PILED ON MY CHARACTER AS A RESULT FROM BEING AN IDIOT. I LOVE THOSE OF YOU WHO DOUBT OR SLANDER MY BELIEFS,BECAUSE I WAS YOU AT ONE POINT, AND WHILE I WAS THAT WAY SOMEONE LOVED AND PRAYED FOR ME.

I just dropped out of the orange county program. It was very abusive (mentally) and very selective as far as how and who they choose to hand out punishments to. Going into the program I didn't really know what to expect. After being there for only five days it was clear to see that they abuse the love and grace that God really has to offer. I was treated a lot better than the stories I've read after telling them I wanted to leave, although they attempted to make me believe there was no other way to get saved from drug addiction. There is good and bad in everything in life and I believe the same is true at teen challenge, but it just wasn't for me. Just a note I am still clean and seeking help through my own church and a sober living. I truly believe that teen challenge is a place for people that are at their bottom and or have no other place to go because they're straight out of prison or jail and or very ignorant.

It sounds like your son is just totally rebellious and could care less about serving God. Reaching out to God is the answer for anyone who is hurting from drug addiction or alcohol. My daughter is in her 7th month in Ventura and she is serving God with all of her heart. She is so happy and she intends to come back after her 1 year commitment as an Intern. Her career goal was to be a Nurse, drugs got in her way and now she wants to be either a Drug & Alcohol Counsel or a Probation Officer. She would refer them to Teen Challenge. I Praise God for the Teen Challenge program; it's not perfect but it pretty close if you have your heart open.

-In response to: "stephen guidry GRAD OF TC"'s post-- First off I want to let you know that I came onto this forum to get info on Kern County Teen Challenge Shafter Mens Ranch because my boyfriend left for TC yesterday, and will be there for 12 months. I came on here to get insight from people who wanted to help share info on this program and how it works as far as contacting your loved one at TC..... I most certainly did not expect to see a TC Grad to write those mean, hurtful words in a forum that is supposed to HELP and inform concerned family members and friends who have a loved one in TC.
I am a strong Christian/ a woman of God....and I am 100% certain that a sober individual who has graduated from TC and is living for the Lord would never use such hurtful, angry, defensive, and rude words towards anyone. Your defensive, angry and closed minded post was not at all necessary in my opinion. I honestly wish you the best in life and I will pray that your soul soon starts to fill up with joy and encouragement rather than anger and the desire to be verbally abusive.

Well id like to start off by saying that im proud of you and your accomplishments through Christ.... I dont see where i was being hurtful and abusive in my post, it was in response to comments made on this site which is called "Teen Challenge exposed",not one called "Im going to post great stuff about Teen Challenge". Ive herad so much stuff about how bad this place is, since you went through the program Im sure that you saw people get kicked out and then talk about how abused they were, correct? I was just being real the stuff I wrote is exactly how it is, we spend so much time trying to sugar coat things, when in reality we need to be honest, brutally honest at times. If honesty gets under your skin then that means it hits home inside you,I'm not sorry for saying what I posted, dosent make me less of a Christian nor you more of one because you feel differently about how to approach situations. Thank you for praying for me I need it just as much as you or anybody else, just dont pray for if its out of spite because you feel I might of offended people or yourself, I will always stand up for what I believe in.For those of you who look to this site looking to decide if this program is the right fit for you or a family member,it is and not because the program or the people who run it are flawless, but because its a great place, that God has ordained, to be that you can learn to be a better person and to build a relationship with Christ. You have to want to change!

The reason your son is in this mess in the first place is because he DOESN'T have God/Christ in his life. If you constantly nurture your child and pretend that nothing is wrong when things get tough and his life is spinning out of control that makes you an enabler and you are encouraging destructive behavior. No if's, and's, or but's about it. This is what is wrong with our society today. These kids and adults need to be held accountable for their actions, and as their parents, we need to stand firm. Get in between your children and drugs/alcohol NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES or you will be standing by their graveside wishing you had. Believe me when judgment day comes and your children are not standing beside you in The Kingdom of Heaven you will be begging for mercy to have them with you. There is only one salvation and that is through Christ our Lord. Satan already has his foot in the door and ready to take our children's souls by providing them drugs and alcohol. God Bless You All!

To the person who said that you can not pray addiction away, that is absolutely not true!!!! Yes you can pray addiction away and me and my husband are living proof of that!! After suffering from drug addiction for many many years we finally found a great church with awesome true people of god that was willing to pray for deliverance over us ! GOD delivered us both from our addictions and restored our family!! The thing is, you have to want it and believe!!! I give GOD all the glory! We have been drug free for 2 yrs now.
