I was recently told by a child who was held in the Sevier County Juvenile Detention Center that the facilities there are filthy. The place is overrun with cockroaches and the bathrooms were too filthy to use. The child also said that he/she was not allowed to call their parents. The milk that was served with their meals was spoiled and curdled. The rules that were posted were taken down soon after the child was placed in the room. One of the rules stated that two paperback books were permitted in the room, but a book that was brought to the child was not given to him/her.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this at this facility?

No matter what they did, they should be allowed to call their parents. And I'm sure even our convicts on death row are entitled to milk that is not spoiled!

Regardless of whether or not you think the child lied or not, shouldn't the allegations be investigated? What if it was your little angel that was arrested for doing a "kid thing" and was put in a nasty pit for three days and nights before their hearing?

Did someone report this to the state? It probably should be investigated.

Maybe it being so nasty will give the little turds a reason to get squared away and not come back.

How would you feel if your child, grandchild, niece, or nephew was in there in that filth and could not call you? We all make mistakes, kids included. Being put in there does not necessarily make a child a bad seed. What if they got sick from the filth or spoiled food? What if they died? Wouldn't that be enfringing upon their rights as a human being? You wouldn't treat a dog like that!

People live in filth every day, Detention centers and jail aren't supposed to be nice, they aren't going to die because its nasty, no one has ever died in that detention center or Sevier County Jail because of the living conditions, some have killed themselves but not due to poor conditions, maybe it's filthy because the inmates are filthy and lazey, let them sit in filth for a while and think if thats how they want there lives to turn out, maybe they can get back on the right track. You are right anyone can make a mistake and get back on there feet, but when they are in the klink serves them right.

Well, that is your opinion. When I called the state department they were REAL interested in the reported conditions. It seems even the juvenile facilities have health codes and guidelines they must follow. They said they were going to investigate the complaint.

I thought we had progressed past the dungeon style of imprisonment of the dark ages. Maybe it is just the thinking processes of some people that are still there.

Some of you people are so backwoodsy, regressive, and plain stupid you have EARNED the name HICK! It is small wonder that many others think you live in IGNORANCE, because many of you do. Yes of course there are public health codes and maybe jails and detention centers are not meant to be nice, to deter those from repeated visits, however inmates there are entitled to live in clean conditions, free from rodents, insects, spoiled food, and barbaric treatment. That includes abuse. And as for you SCSDFan, yes people do die from diseases associated with filth. Here and abroad. Educate yourself. Making mistakes does not mean that someone has to pay with their life from vile conditions. Especially a kid.

You are uninformed. People who work with children such as teachers, guidance counselors, etc... are required by law to report abusive situations to the proper authorities. Reporting the possibility of abuse is not testifying in court.

how in the world did you tie someone saying they deserve it with being a backwoods hick? your a bigot! you live here but put everyone from here down? no one deserves to live in filth, but i have a known a few kids go through there and its by far not nasty unless the kid its self made their own living area nasty, then they should be made to clean it up. im sure there are plenty of people up north that share the same " let them live in it" attitude , what are they , hicks too? Yes people do die from nastyness, ever heard of the bubonic plague? how do you even know the person that made that comment was even a native to tennessee, jump to conclusions and blame it all on being from tennessee, idiots are every where, not just tennessee!

To Tired of the Put downs,
If you wish not to be referred to a hick, than do not act like one and do not spew your own bigotry simply because you are offended at what was said. There are people here who think way to literally and concretely and cannot see the nose before their own face, yet claim to be Holy rolling Christians. More like hypocrites. Practice what you PREACH. Kids do not deserve to be locked in filth nor be abused. Out with the middle ages. Period.

If you are so worried about this then go see for yourself, you can go and tour the Detention Center. I know for a fact that this child is not being honest, have you ever wondered why the child was in the Detention Center in the first place. A child will tell you what ever he/she wants in order to get the attention away from them in order to justify ,in their own mind, their wrong actions. Did the child tell you why he/she was there. I bet it wasn't for being a respectful obedient child, have you ever thought about that, and you posting this on here helps this child justify his/her wrong actions. This child needs to be responsible for his/her actions and not let other like you start things like this. Do you want to help this child then keep your mouth shut when you do not know the facts and tell this child when you do wrong it is wrong and maybe down the road he/she will not be in jail or prison for life.

I knew why the child was placed in the detention center. I even went myself to investigate the charges and the complaint against the child. I've known the child for over a year, and I know like any child (or human being, for that matter), he/she was capable of lying. But, I also believe that any complaint like his/hers should be investigated. With all the corruption we have in this county, why shouldn't it be investigated? Should we simply sweep it under the rug, because a juvenile who may or may not have committed a crime complained about the treatment he/she received there?

I only created this forum to see if anyone else had experienced treatment like that in our juvenile facility. I was not trying to justify anything the child might have or might not have done....I didn't even mention why the child was in the facility. My only concern is that if there IS a problem in our juvenile detention facility that it not get swept under the rug, like all the other wrong-doings that go on in this county!!

You said I could help this child by keeping my mouth shut. Well, let's suppose for a moment that what this child said was true....if I responded like less responsible citizens, like youself, and your child was the next child arrested and put in juvie. Would you want your child to get sick from the filth and spoiled food?? If your child was refused their rights as a human being and died as a result, how would you feel??

I did go to the facility to drop off a book for the child (which the child did not receive). They would not let me in. I did not get to see the child or see what kind of facility they had inside. Sounds suspicious to me.....maybe they DO have something to hide, I don't know. That is why I called the state department when the child told me about the conditions inside.

Get off your high horse.

To Dav17, Your an idiot. Amen to hmmm!

Sounds suspicious to me too. Any place that would not allow you in does have something to hide. At least you have the integrity to DO something about it. Closing your eyes to this type of abuse simply condones it.

Many here are not interested in solutions but simply spew stupidity. Additionally, many need to fall from that high horse you mention and hopefully will break their neck, to inhibit their mouth from speaking further rhetoric.

Any person has the ability to lie, child or adult. However just because one is a child in trouble from making a poor choice, does not make one a liar. As for poor choices, we all have done that at sometime in our lives if we are really honest. We may have not all been caught or locked up, but every person has regrets for some misdeed they have done.

Juvie is probably run like the jail in Sevier county. They not only need the state in there to fix their problems, they need the ACLU and Oprah Winfrey. Sexual abuse galore. Physical abuse galore. Mental abuse galore. Hell even the sheriff participates in this crap and even condones it. Sometimes condones it by silence and apathy. What makes you think juvie would be run any differently?

Many here think this is well deserved treatment for criminals. Or at least the idiots do. Successful rehabilitation does not occur with further abuse, only perpetuates the violence. But one needs more than a narrow minded perspective to see this.

Idiocy breeds. So does apathy.

I know for a fact that not all those kids belong there. My friend's daughter was put in for a weekend before they realized they had the wrong girl. Someone said she stole something at Wal Mart, but it was another girl with the same color and hair and build. They only saw the back of her and the police came and picked her up. They didn't look at security cameras until Monday and realized the mistake. People that are quick to judge should look in the mirror once in a while.

If you are so concerned why don't you tour the facility. I took my son through it and it was very clean. I don't know about the milk but I doubt it was bad sine they received their food every two days. There is a toilet in each cell. The only restrooms are used by the guards and visitors. The kids are not allowed any paperback books the first 24 hours, so they will think about thy there are in there. They are allowed to have their homework brought in and are given an area to work.

Ok, I will go ahead and assure you that child IS a liar. I have been a corrections officer at that facility and it is cleaned 2-3 times a day. Detainees clean their rooms once either every day or every other day depending on time to do so. EVERY child that comes through the facility is on suicide watch for 24 hours when they get to the facility at which time they are not aloud do have contact with other detainees nor can they have books or phone calls. Also on the phone calls, depending on whether or not the detainee is a felony case or not will decide what day they are aloud to have a phone call. All parents or guardians are notified during the intake procedure so there is no reason for the child to call anyone. This is the cleanest facility I have ever worked in and the kids are well taken care of. And all food is EXACTLY the same as what is served next door at the jail since they prepare all of our meals which our officers also eat. I don't think I would drink spoiled milk. Children are manipulative. I have seen the best and worst of kids in that facility and all of them say what ever they can to make their situation easier
