I was just wondering if everyone feels the same way I do.My kids want to go swimming in a out door pool. But Seymour doesn't have one so we load up and go to Ava. What can we do to get one here. I know we have an indoor pool at the Y but its not the same. Just currious.

People like you are the reason the country is broke. How about you get off your lazy ass, work and save enough to build your own pool. Stop expecting other people to pay for your entertainment. The city government should not be involved in pools, theaters, orchestras, stadiums or anything other than police, fire, roads and infrastructure, utilities, water and sewer. Taxation that is used for such nonsence is stealing by other means.

Wow, you need to stop being so hateful and get a clue. How much money a year is the city government spending on the pool at the YMCA? Not to mention all the other money the city is giving the Y. I agree completely about where the money should be spent, but unfortunately it is being used to make a handful of uppity people feel better about themselves. You need to find out who the real problems are before jumping on someone.

I know all about the city spending on the Y. You are right, it is a disgrace. I have been at council meetings when representatives from the Y show up, palms up, spewing all their propaganda about how much good they do, along with their BS excuses for failure and their expectations to be rewarded for this. I just get pissed when people, most people think there should be a government program for their every want and need. The city should let the Y sink or swim on it's own. The city has too many sucklings as it is and they vote, just look who they elected for mayor. When prospective businesses and potential employers who actually do their homework and look at the demographics, is it any wonder why the smart ones choose to go elsewhere ?

the Seymour pool IS a PUBLIC pool!! It is not the YMCA pool- it is funded by city taxes. Unfortunately when we all voted to fund a pool we were ALL under the impression that it would be an outdoor pool!! Had I known it would be an indoor pool I, along with many I know would have voted NO, NO, NO, NO!!! The reason we have an indoor pool is because a few certain people with pull in thi town have kids that were going elsewhere to be on a swim team!!! I along with many other parents load my kids up in the car and go to another town (yes usually Ava) and pay to use their outdoor pool. Because when its hot outside who wants to go to an indoor pool!!!! Yes, i support the pool in the winter however it would be much better supported by the community if it were an outdoor pool. I know that the pool is in financial trouble- there is never many people swimming there and the income can not be meeting the outflow of $$$$!!! but certain people got what they wanted so they will be happy as the city goes broke supporting the pool they wanted!!!

First, the pool is owned by the Y.

Second, it is not funded by city taxes, but rather taxes are used to help with maintenance. Big difference.

Third, it stated right on the ballot that it was an indoor pool, so how could you think otherwise?

Yes taxes are used for maintenence. The tax payers are taking it in the rear on their electric bills so a hand full of sucklings at the Y get free electric. I believe the Y sucks close to 20,000 bucks a year out of the electric revenue. The city having its own electric department is a wonderful thing, but when special interests get free or discounted electric, that means the rest of the customer base get raped on their electric bill. When special interests use the power of government to force others to pay for their pet projects or entertainment, it may be legal but it is still stealing.

Are you serious ?? Wow !! I knew it was bad, but not that bad. Like I said, it may be legal but it is still stealing. Talk about grand larceny !! I think we should divide $100,000 by the number of electric customers in town, then divide by 12 and just not pay that amount at bill paying time. Unless of course you are a fan of being ripped off by the city and the Y. I also think we should have the option of having our power supplied by an honest and responsible source. We should be able to opt out of this rotten system.

you might not like it but when something is voted on by the people and passes, it is legal.. its not grand larcenyit was passed to have a tax increas and use that sadi amount to help maintain the INDOOR pool.you might not have voted for the pool or tax increase or anything else for that matter but truth is,,, majority rules.. not your single opinion.my self would rather an outdoor pool as well but i hardly think its feasable right now... plus we could pass a tax increase and fund an outdoor pool for seymour then in one year when you want to complain about high taxes.. tuf luck.. every one wants to complain about the indoor pool at the y and how much money the city spends in helping maintain it... but i guess every one forgot WE ARE THE ONES THAT VOTED YES FOR THE POOL.

Are you serious .......

My only advice to you is for you to find out a bit more about this. Ask any of the city guys or someone at city hall. The city was spending much more than what the tax called for. And the tax was for the parks department and to HELP MAINTAIN a pool, not to totally support the Y.

Possibly you could start a petition. There will never be an outdoor pool unless someone initiates the issue, and then get the right people on your side.

So the ballot said "Shall the City of Seymour impose a sales tax of 1/2 of one percent for the purpose of providing funding for local parks for the City including the maintenance of an indoor municipal pool, such tax to terminate upon the retirement of general obligation bonds issused by the City to finance such local parks."

Doesn't that mean the tax money goes to the parks department, which the maintenance would be a part, but not all, of? Oh wait, the pool must be INDOOR (which it is) and also a MUNICIPAL POOL (which it is not). And since there are no bonds, shouldn't that alone be enough to terminate the tax?

It's your money they're spending. You decide.

WOW drive by the YMCA look up and read the name on the building. Hmmmm wonder how one gets their name up on a building like that? A smart person once told me that oh they donated the money to have it built! So a little graditude would be nice instead of all this ignorant arguing about the finances of the pool!
