Why wouldn't I? I think most people would.

The better question for YOU to answer is: what did people actually do beFORE social security?

Answer: they helped their parents and grandparents.

Next question....

Prior to SS, the life expectancy for all genders/races was about 60 in the US. Today it's closer to 80. What I think most people don't get is SS is not a retirement plan. It's a supplement. There were always problems with it's implementation. When originally enacted, stay at home moms were the norm back then. I can cite countless situations from my grandparents generation where the man dies early on, 55-65, the woman has never paid a dime into the system, and she lives into her 80's or 90's. Also another great war and the following population explosion could not have been foreseen. Well now that population explosion is nearing SS age, and the boomers didn't have as many kids as their parents did. Thus we have a fraction of the boomer workforce to pick up the slack. Purely from a numbers standpoint, forget about all the other issues that impact it, it was doomed to fail from the beginning.

SS was the beginning of modern day liberalism. It was one of the first steps to get to where we are today, the nanny state. Our current state of affairs is not something that elections are going to fix.

None of that answers the question.I have no one left. My son died in Viet Nam. My daughte died 2 years go. All our savings went to pay hospital and funeral costs for my husband. There is no one left to help me. I have friends in the same place I am. How many people do you think would really step up and pay these crazy medical bills and support there Parents , Grandparents, Aunts or Uncles?Yeah we all know it was never meant to be sole income. Don't give me some thing you got off the internet. Think about what would actually happen if you had to step up. Would you take your Aunt in?

Medicaid will take care of the medical bills. There are any number of federally subsidized housing units in the area. You obviously have internet access, start here: http://www.iaaaa.org/ Maybe they can help, if not I'm sure they can direct you to help.

The question was ,When they take away SS and Medicare/ Medicade. I'm forced to take the government help now. I wasn't saying I have nothing now.I sold our home. The car is gone. I'm not starving. My question from the beginning is did we "All" raise our kids to step up and care for our seniors in time of need?I see a lot of people still supporting their adult kids , lay offs have affected the whole country. Will those kids support the seniors when the load hits the fan?

Ok next question. You going to take care of your old sick auntee? She doesn't get any help because some Politician got rid of every thing . You going to step up? She is only an Aunt after all.

You're joking right? Have you seen what's going on....ANYTHING in the last 50 years? With the explosion of the nanny state, budget cuts are defined as a reduction in increases, and you think the three biggies are going to go away......you're nuts.

ok get over your self just answer the question.would you take in an older relative that has no income and qualifies for no help. simple question. would you or not? I think you would be surprised how many seniors there are who are existing on way below what you would expect. Most people on SS receive less than $1000 a month. 0 to $20 a month food stamps. Medicare does not pay all medical expenses.Even with these assists most need family to step up. I think what mamma wanted from the original question was to raise awareness. Not all seniors have family to take care of them.My family is helping the woman who lived next to my parents most of her married life. She is alone now. We take her food , My sister has a deal with the utility compant to pay all her bills from them. And the pharmacy charges her the least they can We make up the rest.My kids are taking care of her lawn and a local group cleans for her. This is what we are talking about. Are you willing to take care of your old Aunt? yes or no .

I think I answered the question, I'm already dealing with my parents, they're older relatives aren't they? I'm well aware what kind of SS checks people are receiving. No, Medicare does not cover all medical expenses, however Medicaid pretty much does. If they don't it's not like anyone's going to sue you, there's nothing to get and if they do sue you, so what, you're not going to lose anything.

My grandmother lost everything to medical expenses, we just left her to die in the street. I get the point of the post, but it's a stupid question.

Stupid? really? your a stupid person. You don't automaticlly get medicade. Most of us don't get it.Alot of seniors are worried. They have know it all, like you, family. I see you didn't answer bens question. would you take in an Aunt? I wasn't directing this thread at you. I wanted every one to think about this. When I was a kid we took in any one who had nothing. My grandmas sister and brother spent their last years with us.Its not easy but its coming. Wait and see. You may need your grand kids to take you in.Will they? that was my question.I have no family left. If it comes in my life what do I do.

I hope that was suppose to be funny. Its not. We are building a bigger home and filling our basement with non parishables.People need to pay attention. I will take in my old Aunt or Uncle.I wonder how many younger people would say that or more important do that. I do understand why mamma is concerned. All the political speech aside the older generation is worried. This is not a joke to be taken lightly. Mamma I don't know where you are . I wish I did You could come to us , if the need arises, or now if you wanted.I know a dozen seniors that have out lived their familys and only have their friends to depend on.Its sad and scary. And you Sir should be ashamed you belittled people who are genuinely afraid of what the future holds.

What is there to be sarcastic about? She asked a straight forward question, and instead of people actually considering and discussing the options, She was talked down to.Its a given He is helping his parents but how many of you would help older relatives your not so close to? I'm surprised in small town America this hasn't gotten more useful attention. I called my gran and asked some serious questions. I called my cousins and a plan is being developed.I was surprised to find that my 75 year old uncle only get 480 a month from his SS . How do you live on that? I get more a week.Just surprised more aren't taking this serious.

Actually this subject is on Forums in a lot of states and a lot of different forums.I agree the younger people have no idea how bad is it for some older Americans. What they get from Social Security comes no where near what they earned as workers. With medical costs today it doesn't take much time to tap out what we assumed was a healthy nest egg.Medicare doesn't cover every thing and I see its hard for most to get Medicade. Some States are worse than others , but its never a given.I have a trust set up to take care of my loved ones if I'm gone.At my age I could go long before my younger brothers and sisters.I agree with Mamma , drop the Political garbage get down to the facts. How many families will/ could take in and give the older generation a home and some security. My hats off to the ones who have posted they have a plan.

I don't see how I'm the bad guy in all this, but oh well. I offered up several solutions to problems that everyone seems to want to overlook. What do you want me to do, take her in myself? I'm busting my butt at multiple jobs to take care of my own family, two parents, two kids in college, etc. I can't save the world. I'm done with this subject.
