Where do these law enforcement officers stand on our illustrious treasurer?
I agree with others that we have a crisis in our treasurerís office. And while I find it interesting that John Burke and his supporters want to concentrate on his education from 30 years ago and a new-found conspiracy theory regarding the county auditor trying to take over the county, this election should be about John Burkeís record. Thereís a reason theyíre trying to avoid that discussion.
Despite his much touted business expertise, Mr. Burke failed in his only business venture. He took over a successful local car wash and ran it into the ground, defaulting on his contract. When he was successfully sued to perform on that contract he filed personal bankruptcy, defaulting on over $600,000 owed to local and national merchants.
During the course of that lawsuit the contract to purchase the carwash was made public. The prior owner of the carwash pointed out the discrepancy between the contract and what Mr. Burke had been claiming on his tax returns and Mr. Burke was indicted on six felony counts of filing false tax returns. He eventually plea bargained a guilty plea to six misdemeanors related to those charges.
But thatís his private record. Clearly his education and business expertise make him the man for the job, donít they? Unfortunately for Mr. Burke, he has a record here too.
The treasurerís office has two main jobs Ė collect the taxes and invest the countyís money. How has Mr. Burke done? From 2008 to 2012 prior year tax delinquencies have exploded in this county, up over 72 percent. From 2007 to 2011 we have seen investment income plummet over 80 percent under Mr. Burkeís watch. Of 11 surrounding counties, eight outperformed Medina, two by almost 15 percent. Mr. Burke and his supporters cannot dispute these numbers.
Clearly we have a crisis in our county treasurerís office. This November, say no to John Burke. Itís the best thing for Medina County.
