over priced, bad q....expensive

3 of us...40 bucks.....8.50 for the bbq sammie...10.50 for the bbq plate and 14.00 for the 1/2 rack of ribs..all bland and dull.

the green onion hushpuppies w/maple syrup were 7.25..thats right seven dollars and twenty five cents for hushpuppies..we couldnt afford them.

service is slow. it should never take an hour to eat bbq simple as that. of course what they are serving is an insult to the pigs that died.

if this is upscale bbq...i cant wait to get back to ridgewood or woodlawns...both better and cheaper

Thanks for the update. I wasn't even aware they were open, and I drive by there every day! When did you go, and what time? Is it worth a second look? I was hoping for better; just asking.

What I posted in the Pappy's thread -

Much smaller menu than Pappys.

No more breakfasts and limited hours for lunch and dinner.

Pulled pork flavor was ok, but not as good as Pappy's and there was less of it for more money.

I too saw the hush puppies for $7.25 and shook my head, they should be 1/2 that.

Maybe they're hoping to cater to the out of towners with vacation homes here - aka, the very well to do.

For us locals who are living in an area where the cost of living is like California and wages are low, this reopening isn't geared towards us.

Giving it some thought, the owners of Frontier are the folks from a very posh restaurant in Banner Elk. The menu as it sits is their first attempt to see what will work in the area at that restaurant.

If it doesn't work or they get enough people saying what are you thinking with $7.25 hush puppies, they may rethink things and adapt to what the area wants and can support.

Best bet is to just give them an honest review and see what happens in response.

My family and I had a very pleasent meal there last week! We tried multiple items and they were all tasty. In terms of their prices... I will say this. It is not far away from where Pappys was and the Pappys food quality and freshness wasnt even in the same ballpark. Pappys potato salad obviously came from a plastic container. Had the hush puppies and I will pay two extra dollars for something that good! My family's overall experience was great. My family of four got out of there for under 65$ with a tip. Money well spent when you can taste the freshness in each bite.

was visiting the banner elk area and came across frontier bbq, overall a well executed bbq restaurant. meat was fresh and moist, prices very reasonable for the quality of the food. highly recommend for the bbq lover. had the frontier platter and it was enough food for three . staff was very friendly and the service was on point..

I agree with Had to be Said. Crazy expensive (this is supposed to be a barbeque joint, right?), beans right out of a can and 23.00 for a rack of ribs to go, no sides? And their "Texas barbeque" is a joke and not even close. I know, I worked in Dallas for several years. If I want real Texas barbeque and tasty ribs I'll go to the Bayou in Banner Elk.

I sat down and had the brisket. The meat was moist and flavorful but the portion was shy. 3 small strips. 4 would be more like it, closer to normal portions.

The sides I tried were the sweet potato fries which were good and I had baked beans. Again, the portions were smallish, especially the beans that came in this tiny little bowl you'd expect the waitresses to bring you a wedge of lemon for your water in.

What made me shake my head was the pathetic little dinner roll that sat on the plate. Are you kidding me? No cornbread or even a nice slab of texas toast? Really?

So you're paying more, getting less to eat and the quality of some items is better, some it's worse.

Like the other person, I wish it was still Pappy's menu.

Wow!!!! Hands down the best brisket I have had in a long time!!!! Everything from the hushpuppies, the pulled pork and brisket to the porch swing tea was exceptional. I'm so glad we didn't listen to the bad reviews on here when we read them in the parking lot. We took a chance and it was well worth it. We didn't find it over priced at all. My only regret was we didn't save room for the homemade dessert.

The service was outstanding. Our server was extremely friendly, very good about making sure our drinks stayed full, he was knowledgeable, and our food was out to us much faster than most restaurants.

The food, however, was awful. My wife and I walked in thinking that maybe, just maybe we could get food that came somewhere close to Pappy's. Good God were we wrong. The soup was decent. Nothing to write home about but I'd probably have it again. The hush puppies were greasy and bland. The maple butter that comes with them was good but when you have, in your hand, something that is already too greasy to begin with, do you really want to make it greasier? The main course for both of us was the "chopped" pork platter. The word "chopped" is used loosely here because we still had to attack it with a fork and a knife before we could fit it into our mouths. The sauce tasted more like smoked vinegar than anything. Even the "sweet" sauce that our waiter brought out from a "secret" room in the back had that overpowering vinegar flavor with molasses thrown into the blend. Not kidding, I used one of their little side dishes as a mixing bowl so that I could stir a few packets of sugar into some of the "sweet" sauce and make it palatable for me. The green beans were okay. Pappy's used canned ones, Frontier uses fresh ones which is a pretty good idea but they're still really bland. The macaroni and cheese is a tiny, little, yellow nightmare. The texture, the flavor (or lack there of), and the portion was all just miles under par. Easy Mac tastes better than the stuff they sell at Frontier, and it only costs a buck or so. On the main course, we really wanted our money back but my conscience prevents me from asking for such things at a restaurant unless the situation carries some extraordinary circumstance. My dessert was actually excellent. I had the bread pudding and it was perfect, easily the best part of the meal for me. My wife had the ice cream sandwich and it was, also, a tragedy. The cookies they use taste like the kind you would get in prison. They were hard, obviously pulled out of a box and then not even tossed into the microwave for a few seconds. A scoop of ice cream jammed in between them couldn't save them in any of the darkest corners of Hell, but Frontier tries it anyway. Upon this, I declare "failure."

While I'll admit that much of my disappointment stems from the new restaurant not being Pappy's, the fact remains that the food is horrible and barely worth half the money they charge for it. We won't be back. I'm still alive so I won't tell anyone not to go there. But, if you decide to try them out, stick to the cheap stuff first before you blow any real money on what will probably be a huge disappointment.

I have to agree with pickle, above. Sauces are not as good as Pappys. Brisket is good, pork is fair and the side dishes are an insult considering the prices, you would find better at Golden Corrall. Bread pudding is very good, about the best thing they have. And don't waste your money on any of the soup.
