Jacob Packman was shot and killed on 31 Mar 1922 in Sesser. I am trying to do genealogy for the family. Can anyone suggest how I find old newspaper articles or police reports about this crime? I understand it was never solved and may have involved playing cards.

Out in the woods in S. Ill

If it happened in 1922 in southern Illinois..It’s better to let sleeping dogs lie... The county next door wasn't called bloody for nothing, and Franklin County was almost as bad. Sesser was a rough coal mining town at the time with different ethnic groups mixed together with some of the hatred and prejudices of the old country. Union vs. company vs. state and federal government, prohibition, bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, racketeering, corruption and old time back woods orneriness was pretty much the norm. It was at the crossroads of the moonshine that ran from the south to Chicago and east to St Louis/East St Louis. I am not even going to talk about the Klan/anti-Klan factions. I remember as a child sitting around Butler's store hearing the old timers talking about Sesser in the old days. Even in the 60's and 70's there were subjects and names people just didn't talk about.
