I'm sorry about the typos in what I wrote above, but when you're well into your 80's and don't have a secretary any more to type something for you and don't always see to well yourself, they happen.

Response to #20 post, did you just write a story about your life ? Thanks for the Elder reference. You seem like an angry elder...

Ignorance, pettiness and orneriness tend to anger a lot of people, and your posts throughout this thread have been all three. I didn't find post #20 to be any more angry than, say, Jesus was when he was throwing the moneychangers out of the Temple.
As far as telling his life story, I found it instructive, insofar as it gave a foundation for his point of view.
Not being in agreement, and having an opinion tends to anger people as well. In conclusion to my statement I hope it gave " foundation" to my point of view..

I enjoyed reading post #20. He sounds like an intelligent man who has worked hard and lives well but still hasn't forgotten how it is to be poor & need a little help. On the other hand, you ( Jerry Falwell), seem to have nothing but negative things to say about everything and everyone.
Thank You

I'll thank you not to put words I didn't say into my mouth! I didn't say that the PROGRAM shouldn't having accountability; while the the PROGRAM should, it's no one's business how many dollars individual recipient X receives, because of both Federal and State privacy law, e.g. H.I.P.P.A. You may not AGREE with those laws but that doesn't make them any less the laws.
As far as my own taxpaying history, I've likely paid more in taxes alone to the Federal, State and various local governments than 95% of people will ever earn in gross income in their entire lives. I don't say that to boast, but simply to state a fact: I'm a retired independent oil producer who happened to both work hard and get mighty lucky.
I started out as poor a anybody, mister, and was raised during the Depression. There were times when mother and daddy had no choice other than to accept what was then called 'the relief', just to have enough for all of us to eat, and I'll never forget the shame of other people knowing it, or of seeing something important die just a little bit inside my folks. I joined the CCC as soon as I was old enough (helped build Giant City) and then the USAAF in WW2 and my daddy joined the WPA until the mines took up steadily again in 1940. I was lucky-- yes, LUCKY-- to go to the U. of I. on the GI Bill and get my degree in geology.
I never have and never will understand this need some people have publicly shame others who are having a hard time and benefiting from government program X, Y or Z, nor do I begrudge or resent the recipients. Sure, some folks abuse it, but the majority don't. I've never forgotten what being poor was like, and I've never mistaken my own success as being solely the result of MY efforts alone. The taxpayers helped me and mine when we needed it, and I've gladly paid and STILL DO PAY taxes to help fund social programs.
You know, Jesus said to help the poor and be CHEERFUL doing it, Mr. Falwell; I assumed a preacher would know that, but then again, maybe not. What would I, a mere Elder in my church, know?
Amen! We are blessed to have some good people left in this world. I feel the same way. I'm sure there are many more that feel that way too. Many more than the way Mr. Farwell or whomever he is feels. Thank you.
Thank You
