It was mentioned in another thread that Sesser is the ONLY town in Southern Illinois with a 9% sales tax. I researched it on the internet. IT IS TRUE!!!!!! I also discovered that there are very few towns or cities in our state with a sales tax that high. I am outraged that the mayor and city councilmen would do that to the citizens of Sesser.

Everyone in Franklin county is between 8 and 9 percent. You would have to spend $100 in Benton to even save ONE dollar in sales taxes over Sesser.

This much ado about nothing. More twisting and spinning by the Ashmore crowd.

Oops, Benton is at 8.5, so make that a savings of FIFTY CENTS every hundred dollars.

You are "outraged" over 50 cents? Wow, ok.

I will gladly pay an extra 1/2 percent to drive and live on our nice streets. Have you noticed the streets in the neighboring towns? Yuck!

Get the facts before you make a comment: Sesser, 9%(the ONLY TOWN in Southern with a sales tax this high) Benton, 8.5%; West City, W. Frankfort & Christopher 8.25%; Zeigler, Royalton, Orient, Coello, Buckner, Ewing, Valier & Thompsonville, 7.25%. Just for fun, let's list cities that are popular for shopping with Sesser residents: Mt Vernon, 8%; Carbondale, 8.25%; Fairview Heights, 8.35%; Marion, 8.5%. Oh, I forgot, you have to go farther north before you find a city with a 9% sales tax.

This is not "twisting and spinning", this is a fact. Admit it. By the way, I am not a part of "the Ashmore crowd", I don't go to bars and I have lived in Sesser for many years.

I am just trying to figure out, what you could spend 100 dollars on, at one go, in Sesser. Maybe 1/2 tank of gas, but shoot, 100 bucks at one whack? Buttload of Slim Jims at Jumpin Jimmies, a few buckets of orange sherbert at the Custard Stand, but you could only do that for a half a year? Hmm. Any other ideas?

gee i dont know kelley joe, what could i spend one hundred dollars on in sesser...gee, I bet you could spend over $100 dollars at Lukes Feed Store if you are a farmer....I have personally spent over $100 at Sesser Foodland..I dont know of many body repairs or repairs to a vehicle that doesnt cost over a hundred dollars..im sure you could easily spend over a hundred at the White Buffalo, if you are into antiques and that sort of thing...I bet you could easily spend over a hundred at that J&C Furniture place, also if you do most of your shopping for household supplies and such at one time you could spend over another hundred at the Dollar Store..so there are several places in Sesser you can spend over a hundred dollars, theres your ideas. Im not saying Sesser is a great place to live or anything or that you can do all your shopping in Sesser, but you act as if theres nothing in this town, that you cant do any worthwhile shopping and im calling bullshit.

Looks to me like he had the facts. And he's right. You've got your panties in a bunch for 50 cents on the dollar.

Make that 50 cents every HUNDRED dollars.
Outraged? I think I have more important things to worry about than half a percent on my sales tax. But that's just me.....

Oh, sorry. Forgot about the shopping meccas in Zeigler and Thompsonville. The "facts" are that anyone in Sesser leaving town to shop are probably going somewhere where the difference in sales tax is 1% or less. Trying to make a mountain out of a molehill is indeed spinning and twisting. You remind me of people I get behind in line at the gas station. They gripe and moan to high heaven about gas costing 3.79 per gallon, then gladly pay 1.79 for a pint of water.

You left out Allen Lumber and Sesser Autobody. You can easily spend thousands of dollars in one transaction.

He did not have all the facts. Only 4 towns are in the 8% range. Sesser is the only 9%. All of the other towns are 7.25%.

You are trying to trivialize the fact that it is a disgrace for our small town to have such a high sales tax.

Yeah, the four towns people actually shop in....
And when something is trivial, yes it should be trivialized. You seem to be just looking for something to gripe about. Sesser tax payers more than get their money's worth from sales tax revenue.....now our property taxes are a total different story.

actually i did cover sesser auto body when i mentioned body repairs and repairs to your vehicle, tho i probably should have stated it as body shop repairs and vehicular maintenance repairs, but yes, i didnt even think of allen lumber, where you can easily spend thousands of dollars...great example too!! And now that you mentioned it, i also forgot the block plant..have you priced bricks lately...holy cow! again, thousands of dollars, lol.

Are you kidding? The property taxes here is crazy cheap compared to most cities. The only time it's ever expensive is when you first buy a house, because you have to wait til the next year to sign up for the homestead bill.

I'm comparing property taxes to other communities in Franklin county - not to cities. And this of course has nothing to do with the mayoral race.

At least SESSER has a mainstreet that is halfway nice. Have driven through Christopher or Zeiglrr lately? YOU can't argue with the fact that Ned has done a great job sprucing up this town.
