My US Coast Guard son has been re-located to Mobile AL. We are not from there and have no idea what are the best areas/neighborhoods to live in. Can you sweet Alabama people help direct me to what are the safest, better neighborhoods to live in and which ones to stay away from? He and his wife have no idea where to begin looking for a house to rent. She is a RN and hopes to work at a childrens hospital, so if there is a place of equal distance between the base and the hospital, that is even better. Thank you so much.

Well, first off, the distance between the hospital and the base is only a few miles. Think midtown, Oakleigh or East Church St neighborhoods. I would avoid west Mobile, simply because of the traffic, etc.

You will probably get a lot of people telling you to go to the Eastern Shore. Stay in town.

One word of advice however, is when choosing an in-town area, drive the area during night and day. The difference between one block and another a quarter mile away can be significant sometimes.

I will pass this on to them. They are in Mobile now trying to find a place to rent. Thank you so much for the tips.

We lived in the area for about five years and recently moved from there. We still have family and friends in Mobile. We lived in Fairhope, on the Eastern Shore. I worked in downtown Mobile. I would not recommend living in Mobile. Even the police officers I know well, live on the Eastern Shore. What does that tell you? BTW, My wife is also a Kentucky girl.

well unfortunately, they need to live there, or at least for now until they get familiar to the area, locations, driving distance, etc from their jobs. I have passed on all your all's tips and I do greatly appreciate them. Concerned Citizen, what part of KY is your wife from? Is she a CAT fan???:)

Check out Mobile's best kept secret! Seven Hills- outstanding fire department, within minutes to schools (k-12), shopping, Mobile Regional Airport, Coast Guard Base and Annex, and I-10. Purely peaceful country living.

I agree with Rapid-Fire. Seven Hills is great. Country living with in a few miles of anything you need.

Where outside mobile? Florida or Mississippi or another coastal town on gulf? I like being near the water but doesn't have to be on it. Is insurance expensive due to hurricanes? We are looking at relocating from Seattle.

we are looking to relocate from Utah. we have three children. one has medical problems. how is the medical care? we would also have to send them to public school. where is a good location? where is seven hills? we love living in small towns. we currently live in the middle of downtown salt lake city. also, what makes the commute from the east shore so horrible? how long would it take to get from fairhope to midtown at 8am? that is where the new job is.

I am looking to relocate to Mobile. I am a tour bus driver. There is a company there I am interested in working with called Kingsman Coach. Anybody familiar with them?
