If I had seen this earlier, I would have posted to it earlier. Dr. Willie Newman set the bar so high I don’t know how any other physician could possibly achieve what Dr. Newman did.

Today is 01/19/2014 – six years after the community and the world lost this remarkable man. What a huge loss. And I still grieve.

I met Dr. Newman by circumstance in December, 1993 and I confidently say that I would not be alive today if it were not for him. I had been admitted to South Seminole Hospital on 12/18/1993 with severe abdominal pain and fever. Many unpleasant tests were performed and the other physicians were “stumped”. They thought it was some sort of gastrointestinal situation.

Finally, after two days in the hospital someone thought to call in Willie Newman. Thank you God. I was very sick and very frightened. The second I met Dr. Newman, a feeling came over me and I knew everything was going to be okay. I do believe God walked into the room right next to Willie Newman. And ... what about that beautiful big smile! Loved it!

Dr. Newman discovered that I had a large cyst on an ovary. He made attempts to drain it in order to avoid surgery. I would rally for a day or so and then – back to the same old high fever, screwed up white blood cell counts, etc.

On Christmas morning – that’s right - I said Christmas morning – Dr. Newman told me that he had no choice but to perform a complete hysterectomy. He truly was more upset about it than I. I asked him to go ahead – I was fine with it. I just wanted to get better.

Remember, this was Christmas morning. Dr. Newman could have been with his family. His family was leaving or already had left to spend time with other family in Alabama for the holiday. Dr. Newman could have left me with the attending physician – but he would not.

The surgery on Christmas morning went well; I recovered nicely and went home on New Year ’s Eve. But the story doesn’t end there....

Dr. Newman wanted home health care look in on me once or twice a week for a couple of weeks. My insurance would not authorize it. Dr. Newman arranged for his angel nurse, Carol (who was by his side almost every instance I saw him) to personally come to my home to check on me. Never in my life before or since have I had that level of care. He treated me and my family like I was the queen of the world.

Others have referred to this but I feel it deserves another mention. Dr. Newman possessed an amazing sense of humor.

On a follow up visit to his office after my surgery, I had a stubborn incision that would not heal. Dr. Newman used a swab to apply antibiotic ointment inside the incision. It was quite painful and I blurted out a curse word in Spanish.

He began to laugh hysterically. Wouldn’t you know it! He understood what I said. I was shocked and amused that he knew Spanish curse words. We were both laughing so hard that we had tears in our eyes.

The last time I saw Dr. Newman was on December 10, 2005 at our wedding. This busy man took his time to attend our wedding. I could not have been more honored.

And I still grieve.
