No mention here of Don Whitaker.....i think first football player from McNairy Central to play college ball. Was to be defensive captain at Arkansas Tech before his tragic death in auto accident......Played with him for a couple of years and he was a true athlete and team leader. He also played basketball and baseball.
I agree

I think alot of pepole have forgot about Tavaris Atkiins. By far the best pure athlete to ever come through the county. No camps, summer league, or parents. He is the only player that ever had a chance to play pro ball. Only played one year of high school ball. He got in trouble his sophmore year been in jail ever since. If anyone saw him play you know what i am talking about. If he was a few inches taller no doubt nfl or nba. He was built just like Lebron.
Nope

I saw him play ALOT, played against him. He was in NO WAY close to being the best athlete to come through. He was good but that was it.

By far the best athlete. He only played couple of years of organized ball. Ask Maxedon or Brown and they both will tell you Tavaris was the best athlete to come through the county. Read stories of Lebron, Kobe, and Mellow. They all started dunking in games in the 6th or 7th grade. Not touching the net or popping the rim. Tavaris caught a opp from Bobby Jean Damron in Ramer in 8TH Grade. He come from the corner and caught it two handed and rocked it. Dunked in 5 or 6 more games that year. No other player ever in the county could do that. Maybe in practice not in the game. Big difference. Tavaris was a grown man at age 13. That may be the reason he is in prison now.

He might could jump but that doesn't make him the best athlete. I have saw them all over the last 40 years. He is not even in the top 10%. Not a bad player, could have been really good but not top tier.

He could do way more than jump. The dunking shows what kind of talent he had. How many jr high boys have dunked numerous times in the last 40 years only one i know about. If Tavaris would had great parents that took him to aau tourneys, summer camps, etc. He would be playing pro ball. He came out to the baseball field one day never played in his life.He did not even know how to hold the bat. Hit 3 out in bp. Back in the early 90's when the talent was everywhere Tavaris would wear people out at the park. Not just kids from selmer. Kids from corith, aville, bolivar, and hardin. Ask Corey Johnson, or the Hoover boys, they will tell you. I am not saying he was the best team player but raw athletic ability by far the best.

He should have stuck to baseball then because he never got it done in basketball. He might have been a good street ball player I never saw him play down there but who cares about that? I saw him play in a league at the civic center and some older white guys just demolished him.

Truthfully, he may have been the best 8th grader in McNairy County but he maxed out then in size and talent. He was good in high school but he just never got any better. I don't know how you could mention him in the same breat as some of the true McNairy greats

Rinaldo pollard is comparable!!! He was not as tall as tavaris but he was every bit of raw untapped talent!

Reinaldo Pollard may not have the best career but for one year the best athlete on the field ever. Was only a freshman and already had d-1 schools recruiting him.

He was the fastest that I know of, but I dont know how fast Tyrone luster was or anyone after I left. I do know he could take hits like Ernest Hastings and Jeff burns!!! Tyrone doesn't hold the record for nothing either! Corey porter was very good athlete as well! David Wyke was the best tackle i had ever seen!! It would be nice to put us all at our primes and see who comes on top, but we have too let records stand for what they stand for!!! Thanks to all of you that remember all us old athletes, I greatly appreciate it!!!!!!!

What about Walker who played football. A real talented guy who carried the team when called on. He played whatever position was needed and scored 6 touchdowns in tha first game in tha new stadium. Rushed for almost 1000 yards 2 seasons next to Earnest and Cory who were good backs also. Chech out his stats and don't forget that he made tha stop in tha first round of tha playoffs which sent MC to tha second round and it had been a min since that had happened.
