What do you think about a bowling alley in Selmer? Would there be enough interest in it? Do you think enough people would go there over Savannah, Corinth or Jackson? Anyone have any ideas on it or even something else that's family friendly and will attract enough business to stay open in Selmer? We have needed something for young people to do around here for a while now. Drinking beer and playing Xbox with the friends ain't cutting it anymore.

No. Selmer had one before xbox, internet, cellphones existed. Now there are also so many youth leagues. High schools have volleyball teams and soccer teams that did not exist then.

Too much competition for entertainment dollars.

If you want an idea try gaming tournaments. You must incorporate technology that the kids are in to.

Bowling is a once so often gig. It really is not cheap. Been to Savannah lately and a group of 5 kids and adults with shoe rentals and playing 2 games will run $40 or so.

I am not to sure how well a "gaming tournament hall" would work. That seems like it would only target teenagers and most young people would just as soon stay at home to game with friends.

$40 for 5 kids and 2 games with shoe rental doesn't sound that bad in my opinion.

I was thinking more along the lines of bowling alley, pool hall, arcade, or skating rink.

You could always host gaming tournaments or something on the weekends.

I also considered a recording studio. I know a lot of people around here that can sing and have no way of getting their talents out.

Great thinking,,however places just don't turn,it takes money, the investor looks at returns,I don't believe they look for a 30 year return. So get up a investment group and go for it?????

That's odd that is why me and a close friend posted this topic here. We thought of the old Piggly Wiggly to LOL. I guess it is just the first person with the money willing to give it what it takes.
Also, you will have to convince the current owner to sell you the building and there's no telling what kind of shape it is in. It will take a bunch of money to fix that place up!

I guess you could always go for some type of government business grant. I will definitely look into it though!

When I lived there for 3 years, I always said that children needed something to do. What is sad is that the people that live there need to vote e out the scum that runs the town and the county. They want to call it a retirement community, but the only retired people it attracts are ones who never had anything at all their whole working lives. If you're looking for a youth oriented business, go somewhere where the adults have the money to send their children to it. Selmer is not the place

The recording studio is a thought I had also. If you had the equipment to record and charged for hosting the song online and selling them (with a cut of the cost). Even better if there was a market here for podcasting but I seriously doubt anyone here would be interested in podcasting.

I just don't think a movie/bowling/skating would stay in business long enough to recoup your starting costs. What would a 10 lane bowling alley cost to open, 150-200k?

Maybe Selmer City Hall,McNairy County Comm pay you to pod cast like give you a start, from there many things are up for podcast. Maybe Graduation,Wedding Day. The local goverments may find a grant for that purpose. I say go for it.

You can start off Podcasting rather cheap. Bethel,Michie,Ramer. There is a market. Someone has to bring this county out of the darkages. Hell now science classe may teach about The Monkey and the Man.

I think 40 dollars for bowling is way way to high. I don't think anyone would go skating and if they did they would just use it as a place to smoke weed and drink. Look how trashy the one in savannah is. I like the idea of a gaming place that's cool. There are plenty of gamers out there looking for that sorta thing. And also a recording studio would be nice too. But I rather see a movie theatre come in. And not just one that will only play moves up to pg13 or just christian movies. A legit movie theatre. And ya know what regaurding the comment that that would only attract teenagers. Well isn't that the purpose? I think if the kid aint old enough to drive there then they belong somewhere else. That's the problem with kids these days they hang out with people way older than them and they get in trouble they never grow out of. Moral of the story this town is a dead beat down destin to be a retirement town. Nothing more.
