Yeah it's not going to help this town, they should have looked into bring in more work instead of wasting money away on stupid stuff, I bet the artist doesn't live around here, heard he lives around Nashville that should tell people something about this town.

If it sucks... then move. There are plenty of other towns around here with equivalent cost of living should money be the issue. There's several "city" options within reasonable driving distance if that's what you prefer.

If you don't live here... then don't visit.[shrug]

Why stay somewhere that "sucks"?

The artist is Brian Tull and he was born and raised in Selmer his whole life. He is a hometown boy that made success for himself in Nashville as an artist. Now that should teach you something!!!

Then please move the Hell away. Better yet, don't bother stopping - just keep on driving.

It's all what u make of this town not the town itself and that's anywhere u go!!! So if it makes if feel better to blame the town go ahead but obviously there's no one to blame but ur self for that matter

Beth,,the average citizen does not have a chance in selmer. You are free to list what you have accomplished. If you are making a decision on the type of auto a person drives,or maybe where they dine,or who they dine with. But yes feel free to publish your list. Beth, many other cities offer much better job opps. What job opps are here in selmer for average Joe???

Please do not ask people to move away. Really what would we be stuck with?? We need something to offer decent people to move to selmer.

I'm not Beth, but here's our family's list...(not just my household... but immediate family):
#1- College, mostly on-line, govt grants & loans to finance education... currently a RN... will be a Nurse Practitioner very soon. Employed within & around the county.
#2- College education, financed w govt grants & loans... education field within 30 minutes of selmer.
#3- Construction worker, eventually established own company. Pretty successful, but has ups & downs w economy, but overall provides well for family.
#4- Established own small construction field business. Able to provide, but has ups & downs like any construction field. Doesn't do without though. Works mostly in this county, but sometimes in surrounding counties.
#5- Works with one of the above business owners. Provides well for family.
#6 & #7- Went to that school in Crump... gainfully employed within county using skills acquired at Crump.
#8- Works in fast food industry within county.
#9 & #10- College education. Works in education field in neighboring county.

Disclaimer- No one in our family is "rich", but all are able to provide for their spouses/children... have vehicles... food... phones... clothes... some 'luxery' things such as cable... "toys"... can take their kids to do things, etc. Some are also paying into retirement accounts.

And yes, many of us travel to a neighboring county to work. But people from those counties travel here as well.

It's a great place to raise your kids and to call home! Selmer isn't a big "town" not by no means, so of course it's not going to have the greatest job opportunities! So what? There's many of small county towns just like selmer, surrounded with cities that are full of business, so obviously u weren't born or raised here cause if u were surely u woulda seen that selmer doesn't have jobs for just anyone! I guess u could look at it as a retirement town ( not city) I personally like the country a would never move to a city

Its great that you are becoming a NP. Very good accomplishment.
#1 # 2 say pretty much the same thing.
#3 #4 Say pretty much the same, You may be a roofer and consider yourself to be a construction company. It sounds as you have a Dad,Son Company. Do you carry registered Contractor License,,Are you Bonded?
Hopefully the fast food is just temporary or part time.
Sorry the Educator has to leave the county.

By your own omission you just dragging by. Compare Selmer,to Corinth,,Compare the salary. You have not showed me anything that stands out. The NP looks promising. Good Luck.

It appears you work quiet a bit outside this county??

First off there's no jobs here, if you live in McNairy Co. You have to drive a long ways for a decent paying job. And the jobs around here in order to get on its buddy system....but the thing is Selmer waste alot of money on stupid stuff trying to make this place bigger than what is is (traffic cameras) for instance. When there will never be nothing, and putting up another mural is a waste of money, it won't bring people in. Just people passing by and saying well that's pretty but the town is boring with nothing to do or jobs.

They sound the same because I'm not providing more details... as to not identify people that do not want to be identified...
Education field... teacher and psychology consultant.
I'm not the RN.
I'm in medical school. I didn't include myself. Even though I do have a bachelors degree and have been gainfully employed in my professional field until I decided to go to medical school. It has been a long time goal o mine.
Construction... one very large scale business... numerous crews and subcontractors.(Again... not going to identify because they may not want their business name mentioned on this site.)
One is small family, as I stated. Very long time in business. Great rep... hence the description that most of the work is in county. Word of mouth, trustworthy, etc.

"Dragging by" is a subjective description. Almost all of the people described own their homes and land. Most have boats, atvs, big trucks, etc. Do not live paycheck to paycheck. Are not on welfare.

Fast food employee... works her butt off. She's very young... just beginning her adult life. No telling what her future holds. I was just showing that I was not just identifying the most "successful" people in the family. There's a wide array of professions and jobs.

For my particular profession... I did pick the highest offered salary and it was not in Alcorn county. They actually offered the lowest in my field.(Accounting for benefits along with salary.) But I'm sure it's different stories for various fields.

Yes... I did say several of those mentioned work outside the county. But I also stated that "outsiders" travel in as well. Perhaps you missed that.

My point was to give a well balanced list describing the opportunities those around me have found. Both those considered highly successful to those that are considered less successful. I'm not trying to paint a fake pretty picture. Just describing us.

As the previous poster stated... I enjoy the small town atmosphere... fewer jobs and all. I've lived in a different small town that just exploded with business and industry in a 15 year time period Went from a 2 lane main street to having an interstate loop around it... mom n pop cafes to roads lined with all the main stream chain restaurants. Small JC penny's & a Sear's appliance store to Target, Ross's, Rue 21, Children's place, etc.

Obviously I left that place. Because for me an mine... that is not the atmosphere I choose to live and raise my family in. In my first post I stated that if the original poster didn't like Selmer... then why stay? If you want big businesses everywhere... move to one of the many, many cities in this country.

Selmer is rural and peaceful... but you can live here and be successful. Period.

I hope you find your own personal niche in life.

Noticed on another post where you stated half the county was on drugs,,so i guess the salon is where you get the news.
Other than the news i dont see how you keep everything operating on the income of a beauty salon. Like one person can only do so much a day. Like you listed quarter million assets all from a beauth saloon?????? Is your salon located inside your home?

It appears that you and Beth have both described selmer as a retirement town and i think that is what has been pretty much stated. I am happy you are retired and appears you did not make what you have in Selmer. That is the discussion,,the Average Joe does not have a chance of doing here what you have accomplished elsewhere. I understand the tax rate here for personal property, etc it is cheap living for some. The question what do you have to offer the future generation to build a retirement here Selmer or McNairy County.

So what you have is travlers coming to Selmer,McNairy County because our pay is so much higher than their pay??????

Retired?! I wish! Lol. I'm in my early 30's. Lol. I'm back in school fulfilling a personal goal.:)

I did earn my degree in another location, but I did not leave this county for that reason. And I could've earned that same degree while living here. I just happened to not be here at the time.(This, however, is my hometown.)

None of the people I mentioned are retired... hence the career/job/education descriptions. ;) And their ages range from 18-50's.

I didn't say the salary is higher here and that is why some travel here. You are trying to put down words for me. I have not, nor do I care to research all the salaries of various jobs in this county & surrounding counties. Sometimes people simply work where they get hired. I know for a fact that we have teachers that work here, yet live in other counties and vise versa. Sometimes it's just a matter of finding and accepting what is available... even if you have to drive 20 minutes. Some are fortunate enough to be hired in their own county. It doesn't always have to do with salary. And that goes for everywhere... not just McNairy County.(Look at Tipton & Shelby counties... metro area... people driving both directions every day swapping counties during business hours.)

But... it seems that you are looking to have an argument instead of a discussion.(Not shocking considering that seems to be the norm on here.) And I have yet to read any factual statements from you... just ignorant blanketed opinions.

I am sorry that you feel there is no opportunity here. I imagine that attitude and choosing to ignore the fact that people are successful here... well I imagine that would make it difficult for you to succeed. Again... I hope you find your niche in life... whether it is here or somewhere else.:) Good luck to ya!
