All the Californians I know who have moved expecting a great, rich,'green', liberal experience have have their expectations demolished. Californians I know have been made physically sick from the lack of sun and constant rain. The rule of thumb is that it takes 5 years simply to get used to the feeling of claustrophobia and depression but that's simply to 'get used to it.' Once you get to Oregon though you will find it difficult or impossible to move back. Housing prices do not follow much rhyme or reason and they will not go up fast enough to make it possible to move back at a profit. Oregon is a hick state. It's almost entirely rural with all of the problems of tolerance, education, civilization and diversity that implies. You can have a bigger house with more trees but your neighbors may vandalize your car with the California plates and you may never see them as they will hole up in their house when not at work. There is no sense of community in Oregon. There is no sense of shared purpose. It is a very unfriendly place full of people who resent, envy and hate you. If you buy a house, make sure you have tall fences and thorny plants around you. Vandalism from the explosion of kids is everywhere. Oregonians do not watch their children. They kick them out of the house (cabin fever IMO) and inflict them on everyone else. It's a throwback to an earlier age where they expect the 'neighborhood' to deal with their kids. There is little sense of responsibility on the part of parents. Welcome to third generation of Failifornians who transplanted here in the 70s and ruined it for the rest of us natives.

Wow...these posts have been a little overwhelming to read. I know the last post was written in 07...so what is the census now? We are getting trasnsferred to Oregon from Alaska, and i'm hoping to find a great town to raise my children in. Southern Oregon is where we will be relocating to. I know no place is perfect.
Thanks!

If you are into artsy arrogance, move to Ashland. If you are more of a blue collar sort, move to K-Falls. Avoid Medford like the plague. Jacksonville is getting to be upscale but is still sort of small and has a ton of interesting history. If you really want to raise your kids in a great, country environment, move to Lakeview...but that may be a bit far off the beaten trail. Kerby gives me the creeps in a "Children of the Corn" sort of way. Glendale is full of good meaning inbreds for the most part and Riddle and Myrtle Creek have more people get shot in the streets by drunken idiots than any other area in Oregon. Hope that helps. You'll miss Alaska more and more with each passing day.

"Southern Oregon" covers a lot of space, but I assume you'll be relocating to the Medford area, as it's the largest hub. I also have to agree with the "Doc's" comments. Medford is currently in its infancy regarding street gangs, and with a progressive approach to dealing with it, it's sure to become worse. Avoid Medford, Talent, and Phoenix. Ashland is the most "bum friendly" town this side of San Francisco. I would suggest the Shady Cove area. It has a friendly, small town (Mayberry) atmosphere, and is relatively close to Medford.

My wife and I are thinking about Central Point on the west side of interstate 5. Don't worry we are sane people trying to escape from Southern California that is changing for the worst fast. Thank you for all the input. We were first thinking about Grants Pass but wanted to be where there may be more stores, etc.

Most of them were arrogant, rude, and condesending to the locals. We had to endure all of that, including the famous "California Stop," or rolling through stop signs, just during the summer tourist season. Now, we were faced with putting up with that attitude permanently. BTW, we enjoy Grants Pass, however, that city is in the midst of a financial crisis, and they cut public safety...first! Central Point, Eagle Point, and Jacksonville would probably suit your needs just fine.

Portland is much better than south Oregon, or Methford. Tweakers galore, Hep C running rampant, the state is broke and you can tell in Methford. Portland is much more condusive to an easier lifestyle.

Portland is the only place to live in Oregon that won't remind you of the movie Deliverance. Everywhere else, you will be continually amazed at the ignorance and stupidity of people in this state, and then you realize that its furthest away from major populated areas and thats why they believe their own silly horse crap, LMFAO. Watch out for all the ex meth junkies, Hep C, Aids infested oxy and heroin addicts, they are in every town in the state. Don't come here, go to CO, much better place. Just think Oregon as Deliverance, you get the picture.
