I have just found this site, with comments about Selden. I'd like to add some comments please. I have lived in my house in Selden for more than 57 years. When I moved here, it was a quiet, peaceful place and so rural. We still had water hand pumps and ice houses! Middle Country Road was a quiet tree-covered avenue..like driving through a tunnel in some areas...with fields and farms and woodlands. It has grown...much too much for me, but I still am happy to live here. I have never regretted moving here from Nassau County...but it is no longer the peaceful. quiet place it used to be. Something called PROGRESS has seized it, as with so many other places on Long Island. I have wonderful neighbors...but there are of course people in this hamlet that I do not care for...but this is true wherever one may live. One writer referred to the corruption and politics problems...this is not Selden.but is the TOWN..and in all truth, it was a corrupt group, but in my opinion at least, it is far better today. Where can ANYONE live that does not witness some such problems? I am very proud to live here, and my wish would be that it's residents would be more attentive to preserving what historical places we may have left...far too many have been destroyed over the years. Selden does have a lot going for it, and any one that is not happy here...well...the exit door is always open. I quote a famous man...Abraham Lincoln..who said, " I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives". Thanks for reading this.
