I just watched this story on a Sunday afternoon - obviously a repeat on 20/20 I.D. Discovery Channel. But I was disgusted to find that most Caucasians STILL are either unable or unwilling to try and put themselves in the shoes of black Americans.
"John White should have just called the police." Really? REALLY, America? Are we this insensitive and blind to our RECENT history? I am not trying to be offensive, but all you white people out there, do you know what your Great-Grandparents were doing when they were alive. I do. They lived in a nearby city and had a farm and I have a photo of the two of them, smiling and enjoying their large family and Christian faith.
What were John White's Great-Grandparents doing? Let's see here. Would I be lying if I guessed they were busy avoiding the police at all costs in the State of Alabama where they were from? Were they living in abject, dirt-floored poverty? Were they viewed as unworthy of schooling, voting? Were they viewed as ignorant sub-human near animals born to be slaves because of the Curse of Noah's son Ham? Were they despised for being recently freed by the evil "War of Aggression" from the North" and put in their place via lynchings, the men required to step off the street when a white man passed?
Moving forward in time, what were John White's grandparents doing? I know what mine were doing. They were busy building a beautiful home with a Grand Piano in the living room and pretty much whatever they pleased. My Grandfather was a Police Officer. A white Police Officer who worked the "difficult" part of town,(i.e. "black" part of town) but he put those N-ers in their place along with the rest of his Irish Cop friends.
Would I be stretching the truth too far if I took a guess at what Mr. White's grandparents were experiencing? How about STILL having to step off the sidewalk when a white man approached. How about being arrested just for hanging out and talking with a friend: "Loitering" as the cops put it, was not allowed for blacks. How about STILL avoiding the police at all costs, knowing now that 95% of them were part of a terrorist agency formed to keep "uppity blacks" in their God-given sub-human place? Do you think I am exaggerating? Is this what your grandparents were doing? Around the Christmas Tree were the stories you heard about your Grandfather having to remove his hat and say, "Yessir," to ANY white man who spoke to him? Any complete stranger? Did YOUR grandfather shed a tear or raise a toast to an uncle or cousin or father that had been hung, shot, or beaten to death just for being black and disliked by a white man and his buddies for a rumor of raping a white woman?
