How's life treating you in Sedona?

My husband and are considering Sedona as one of our relocation choices. Any thoughts out there on crime, neighborhoods, lifestyles and people in general? Please do not hesitate to tell me all--the good, the bad and the ugly.

Hello Weaffect, good day to you.

My wife and I are also interested in the Sedona/ cottonwood area. My wife is a native of Arizona, and I have spent many many vacations int AZ locations in the last 24 years of marriage.

We also think that Sedona is the final place to be. We have found that the level of business, traffic, and overall feel of the town were ideal to our needs.

I am hoping to hear from some of the local residents in regards to the quality of life, and the social aspects of Sedona/ Cottonwood.

FYI: Look back over the previous comments regarding Cottonwood--not the best place to put down final roots--according to their own residents. I am currently living in Oxnard, CA. I was raised in Carson, CA. Both are very ethnically "balanced" and both are less than ideal as far as crime rates. The sheer volume of people here (200,000 in a small suburb in Ventura county)is daunting; the number of bad eggs is relative to the population. What I am saying is that I am accustomed to "less that ideal" conditions :). In Northern AZ I have found that the lack of volume = lack of (chance for) exposure!

I am beginnng to see a trend with the posts here; there are the very "negative" people who appear to be venting more than objectively commenting, and the diametric opposites who are very happy with life in both Sedona and Cottonwood. On occasion there will come a very thoughtful post in which someone takes the time to describe the feel of the town(s) and share their day to day outlook on the living experience.

My hope, for both of us, is that we will see more of the "thoughtful" type posts and eventually be able to conclude our thoughts toward moving to the Sedona area. I also appreciate hearing from you, and all of these kind folks!

I would advise that unless you have an outside income, or retirement income, you will find the employment in Sedona limited, at least to where you can make a decent living.

Small town living with about 2 million tourists a year visiting. In general the rug is rolled up at nite. People are very nice until they jump in their autos and then many turn in to demons from h&&l.

I have lived here for almost 30 years, here is something I posted at an earlier date to this Forum.

In my younger years I worked at the Chevron Station at the "Y". It was a Full Service station back then and I was making $2.85 an hour, minimum wage for a high school kid. It was the busiest corner in the Southwest and we would get fuel deliveries almost nightly. Sometimes there would be 4 or 5 cars lined up waiting for me to check the oil, tires and give the windshield a swipe. Most were Visitors seeking Sedona's splendor that made the trip across the northland or braved the desert, always tempting fate by not turning off the A/C as they came up the hill from Black Canyon City. Remember the little sign on the right hand side at the bottom?

Mother Nature made Sedona what it is today, we are just her translators. Sedona is known, not only for it's beauty, but for the warm and friendly people that live here and we have spoke to the Visitors in such a way that they return year after year and in some cases they just decide to stay and help. Thank you, we need that.

So.....

I'd like to think.... that I was the first smiling face they saw, quick to give directions while I was cleaning the bugs off the windshield, "Poco is 2 1/2 miles that way, the VOC is another 4", "Slide Rock, why that's 5 miles up the canyon, have fun and don't forget to remove your wallet and keys, oh and by the way can I check your water and oil in case you sprung a leak on the way up?". People that live in Sedona are always so nice, ever hear that one before?

I'd like to think....that I was also the last smiling face they saw. Cleaning the glass once again so they could take in the views on their way out of town, topping off the tank so they wouldn't have to stop and checking the tires, oil and water for peace of mind that they would arrive home safely. You never know, the next person they meet may not be smiling, then again, that's a different town!

w3slinger in Oxnard, I am also considering a move to Arizona in a couple of years, and curently in the Oxnard area. I like the village of Oak Creek area. I am finding homes for sale there under $300,000. I am looking in the range of $200,000. I havent read alot of positive feedback about the area. Are the residents not saying good things to keep people from moving there? An occupied house is better than an empty/foreclosed house. Just my thoughts.

I am looking for anything in the general areas of Sedona, Cottonwood, Cornville and Oak Creek. The values seem to be in the outlying areas of Sedona, but I have spotted a couple of nuggets for right around 200k in town.

My thoughts in regards to your assumption is, yes. I can understand why local residents would not want a rapid influx of non-local residents. If you hve been in Oxnard for 10 years or so, you should be able to relate to their sentiment :)... Oxnard has effectively doubled in population and is still accelerating growth. I too would hate to see Sedona and the outlying areas plowed under for housing developments.

Where do you live in oxnard?

What I we are looking for in lifestyle is LESS. LESS traffic, LESS nightlife, LESS activity, LESS competition, MORE quality of life. My wife and I are looking to buy a smaller home, with plenty of sunshine, culture, and outdoor recreational opportunities. We love the "artsy' nature of the area, and we also love proximity to all of the natural wonders the area has to offer.

W3slinger, I have been in Port Hueneme for 14 years now and it is just too crowded for me. I also am looking for Less, as you stated and MORE open space. Houses are right next to each other where I am at and friends that live near the beach have beautiful homes but you can see in your neighbor's windows. I love the openness of the Sedona area, the Village and the beauty of the red rocks, forest. The Artsy culture appeals to me also. I was there in April and am looking forward to going back soon to look at homes.

Sedona is beautiful!
One of the many great things about Sedona is it has a relatively low crime rate. As long as you live in a neighborhood with houses, not mobile homes, you're good to go.
Gorgeous scenery and hikes/bike rides within 5 minutes of everywhere in Sedona. Only downside is that living in Sedona can be a bit costly. If budget is a problem, check out VOC (Village of Oak Creek) which is a cheaper, but nice, section of Sedona. Zip code 86351.
