I first met Daniel while I was serving as the founding Administrator of the N.J. Bureau of Hispanic Enterprise, created by Gov. Kean in the 1980s. For years, we had been encouraging Hispanic businesspeople to form a veritably statewide Hispanic business entrepreneurs’ trade organization. Finally, with Daniel (at the time leading the Paterson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce), it was like Veni, vidi, vici, as he spearheaded the statewide chamber in 1989. I saw him drive his van everywhere in the state, where he was known on a first name basis by every governor and key civic leader, as he energetically advocated for ethnic entrepreneurship, often times against all odds. More recently, he invited me to participate in the Chamber’s Scholarship Committee, where in addition I represent DeVry University, an institution that also considers Daniel a closed friend. Indeed, I suggested to the Chamber to set aside named “Daniel Jara Scholarships” for deserving students with disabilities, as I further insisted with him to commission the writing of the history of the Hispanic entrepreneurial community of this great Garden State of ours, for the benefit of the younger generations. Coincidentally, last year, he and I were among those named by Gov. Christie to the new Advisory Board of the Center for Hispanic Policy, Research & Development. Not surprisingly, he and Pilar have generously hosted us for board meetings, as we shared a deep interest in improving the lot and image of the community at large, as well as in mentoring the young. We shall miss him; Descanse en Paz this authentic community organizer. Prof. Roland Armando Alum [email protected]}
