My family presently lives in the south bay and I am very concerned about where the world is going - peak oil, sovereign debt crisis, failure of the dollar etc. It looks to me like a total cluserfudge that will take decades to unfold, and I have no doubt that the panic sweeping across Europe will reach us soon. We don't want to be in the bay area for the final oil crisis, but more importantly we want to get ourselves positioned - geographically, mentally, and physically - for what the world is going to be like. Most importantly to prepare our kids for their future.

Sebastopol is attractive to us because it seems like a place where people are ready to do for themselves if the government collapses. I see some small farms and self sufficiency going on, and a town center that looks viable.

I am very libertarian minded - I am certain we are all going to be much poorer soon, and I'd rather be free and poor than enslaved and poor. Will I get along with the political culture in Sebastopol? I think I could get along with hippyish people much better than the religious people in most rural areas of the US. We saw downtown during the farmer's market yesterday - is that a typical sample of the population or are we seeing a lot of tourists?

How are the schools? Do children grow up happy and well adjusted? It seems like a fantastic place to be a kid.

Is there a lot of drug use? Pot doesn't offend me but I would not want my kids anywhere near meth.

Personally I would like to develop a hobby farm, maybe have some livestock but not commit to make a living at it. I might telecommute or run a home business but I am not dependent on finding local employment.

What do you think? Is this the place for us? Where else should we consider?

thanks
