I haven't read the law on this for WA in a while, but I know in other states similar laws are abused.

If a person is 99% through the crosswalk and has their left foot still in the crosswalk with their right foot on the sidewalk about to exit, you get a ticket, even if its perfectly safe to go. They could even have cleared the median and if you try to go with six feet of room or more to spare between you and the pedestrian, you get a ticket.

Though don't get me wrong. I know there are crazy drivers that nearly run over pedestrians either through accident or negligence everyday so its not that drivers are saints and pedestrians are idiots.

My problem here isn't the driver that tries to go with only 6" of clearance and nearly kills someone- they should get a ticket. Also, people should slow down and give a person clearly trying to cross the chance to do so, so I can understand that type of ticketing to an extent.

My problem is when a pedestrian is basically through the intersection, you have plenty of clearance, and a cop gives out a ticket.

Also, some people tend to keep a few feet back from the curb and wait until really close or fast cars pass. In this case, even if you don't know the intention of the pedestrian, a cop can ticket you for not yielding.

While safety is always important, I suspect that between the sudden increase in red light cameras and this type of ticketing, the city is probably more interested in buffing up their coffers than actually improving safety.
