AMI was a nationwide computer software company early in the 'PC revolution', the 1980s. AMI's market was accounting software used by small accounting firms to support their small business clients. The products were sold largely through dealers and agents by way of'turnkey' systems of bundled hardware, software, and support. At one time in the mid-80s, AMI was a major factor in its market. Financial losses on hardware and excessive corporate staff led eventually to difficulties. Many of AMI's top sales staff left after the venture capital firm took over in the wake of those I recall. AMI was a fine company with many dedicated, smart people. But like many computer-related companies, the ground shifted rapidly beneath it. (I used to be a sales manager at AMI.) I do not know the present condition of AMI.

I had a bad experience, but it later turned out much better.

I was hired by a Frank Mango (spelling?) in the summer of '83 to be the marcomm manager. When I went back a few days later to fill out the paperwork, he was gone, with no explanation. So no job. I am so glad that I did not immediately tender my resignation from the job I held. A year later, I joined Sylvan Learning Centers in a corporate position. So a negative turned into a positive and a good payday when Sylvan went public a few years later,

AMI was purchased by SCS/Compute in the early 90s. SCS had their own tax program, but kept AMI's Tax Machine, using a common engine for both programs.

They in turn were sold to Thomson. Thomson ditched the Xenix version of AMI's program. When SCS/Compute had problems bringing a Windows-based version to market, Thomson bought Creative Solutions and killed all of AMI's programs.

I still miss those programs. They had things in them in the 90s that programs today don't have.
