Letters: Trust in the foxhole

There are 7 comments on the Monterey County Herald story from Dec 23, 2010, titled Letters: Trust in the foxhole. In it, Monterey County Herald reports that:

Iwas a draftee during the last stupid war, in Vietnam. The only criteria used to judge a fellow service member was the phrase: "Would you like to be in a foxhole with Suzie or Sammie or whoever?" This phrase included everything you needed to know.

John Howells needs some clues for Christmas. The ROK "taunting" NK? Try the other way around. NK regularly threatens the ROK. They also sink ROK naval vessels without provocation and kill American officers supervising a tree-trimming detail, again without provocation. Enough is enough.

I agree with Lester Tockerman, and disagree with Tony Salameh. Israel has done and given plenty. The Palestinians have done nothing constructive, just support and commit terrorist acts.

In response to Tony Salameh who is a nice man, I would recommend that he denounce Hezbollah and Iran's funding of the terrorist activities of Hezbollah against Israel. At that point I might become more sympathetic to the Palestinian cause (although these people are really Egyptians who built their "own" settlements in this area).

Don't believe everything you read in the paper. There is a lot at stake here including big profits for CalAm, developers, the media that will carry their ads and more tax revenue for our cites with their bloated salaries and pensions. Is there any wonder that the Mayors are supporting this?

However, we could build a smaller desal plant proposal that would solve our current water needs. It would be fairly priced, give the residents a voice in it's operation, and save our town from over development.

Drinking water from a proposed regional desalination plant north of Marina could cost California American Water customers significantly more than what the project's proponents have suggested, according to the state Division of Ratepayer Advocates. A preliminary project analysis completed by the ratepayer advocates estimates the cost of desalinated water to Cal Am customers could be about $7,000 to $7,900 per acre-foot. Project proponents have estimated the cost at a low $4,000 per acre-foot.

There is a group of organized residents trying to stop the large desal project. You can support them. Read more at:

Seaside firefighters embody Christmas spirit

Please add a little something extra in the stockings of each member of the Seaside Firefighters Association, for they truly have the Christmas spirit! Although not greatly advertised, they were at City Hall on Friday to celebrate for the children.

I believe coal is appropriate for our city leaders. Money isn't everything.

P.S. Santa, I've been good this year!

Mary Bunch

We drove by and saw the firemen in the rain. The City of Seaside should be proud of there fire department. Thank you for you dedicated service.

"Tony" from Monterey needs to either start waiting the news or stop watchin al-jezera. israel has offered many comprises, mainly land or control of land to bring about peace only to have more insane, blood thirsty animals move in and lob rockets at them. What the hell is wrong with these Arabs that they spend there whole life obsesed with a bunch of white people in a country the size of new jersey? Absolutely insane

It would seem you never served in the military in a draft situation.
They didn't draft me. And even without the draft, today's ALL VOLUNTEER military has men and women of ALL religious denominations serving. Rabbi's didn't get drafted, they were recruited by the military's chaplain corps.

Has Howells been smoking dope and is suffering from short term memory loss? Ha she forgotten the military doesn't make moves on its own?

Has he also forgotten that North Korea launched an artillery strike on the South?

The only sane response would be a massive bombing strike on North Korea.
