Although I'm unsure if I'm against the death penalty as a concept (I live in the UK), I don't believe it's the only possible deterrant. In the UK we do not have the death penalty, and the rate of murders is much lower than a lot of other countries, especially the US. I do think that life sentences are often not enough, though - I believe they should be locked away for a lot longer, or for the rest of their lives. Even as things are, I wouldn't ever dream of committing such a crime for fear of consequences (and the fact that I'm not evil), and I don't think having a death sentence hanging over me is the only way to get the message across.

I think really I agree with the concept of the death penalty - i.e. you take a life, you lose yours - but I just don't trust the system/government to make sure they get the right guy every time and make the right decision. And at the same time - do two wrongs really make a right?
