“As governor, I have begun to implement policies that start us toward a decriminalization” by introducing alternative “drug courts” that provide treatment and softer penalties for minor offenses, Perry said during an international panel on drug legalization at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Great!!!! The prohibition of pot has done nothing but cost tax payers billions of dollars for what reason? Since it has been decriminalized, we are able to run test (before, the feds wouldn't even let scientist conduct test) and have debunked most of the Reefer Madness debacle. Everything has been dis-proven except for obesity and laziness.

I have never understood why republicans are against this? They are for freedom, lower taxes and capitalism. Why not let a crop come to market that is safe and useful in many situations (Hemp fuel could be our next alternative). Hell, even most of Americas most precious documents are wrote on the Hemp paper.

Most of you know my story... Know about the massive amounts of medication i had to take daily... Know that after 32 years old, i would no longer be able to take care of myself. Well, a friend suggested i start smoking pot when i was in my mid to late 20's as an alternative cure.
I am 34 now, extremely successful, started a family (which i wasn't going to do for moral reasons) and i take NO medication.... but i smoke pot every evening. I have to live with the fact that i could go to prison, lose my children, get blackballed from my career at any time..... it is a hard decision.

Half America is on anti stress meds it seems. Just make it legal so you can take "as needed" and not year round!!!

Pot' s biggest obstacle to legalization is "big alcohol" and big" pharma" Brewers, distillers and the pharmaceutical industry bankroll most of the opposition to legalization.

Jailing people for pot is ludicrous and wasteful. Billions wasted nationally.

Pot laws were originally enacted in order to deport a large Hispanic workforce in the southwest. They first made it taxable and then with held access to the tax stamps. They then started equating all sorts of lascivious behavior to pot use. We all know where it went from there. The original version of Reefer Madness was deemed an accurate cautionary tale against the perils of pot.

I am glad you were able to find some relief with the help of marijuana.

Pot should be legal for anyone old enough to buy alcohol. It can be of great help in reducing the amount of pharmaceuticals people take.

What they NEED to do is change the law that keeps people who have been charged with possession of Marijuana from receiving Federal financial aid for school.

It's insane that they set roadblocks for anyone to obtain an education.

Schools... should be like public libraries... free and open to the public... as should hospitals.

It's crazy that they tax the shit out of us to blow people up with remote control bombs on the other side of the world... but if we need healthcare we are forced to buy an insurance policy... and then it's a shitty overpriced policy.

How about HEALTHCARE and EDUCATION FIRST... bombs second????

Great, legalize pot then everyone can sit around smoke dope and get fat and lazy and act like HF. Great, just great. So much for Perrys conservative values. Change party Rick.

I don't like Rick Perry and I know, as a voter, Rick always comes up with positive voter oriented just before each election - while he is not running, his cronies are.
With the above said, I agree that pot should be decriminalized - we pay $ billions on the persecution, prosecution, and incarceration of people for minor drug offences.
The main reason for keeping pot illegal is simple: the alcohol and drug industries as well as the for profit prisons pay big money to keep it illegal to keep pot from cutting their profits.
As a former police officer I would rather deal with twenty pot smokers than one drunk. I never had a pot smoker try to fight me, but had countless drunks fight, argue, and I cant even count how many drunks vomited or relieved themselves in the back seat of my patrol car.
I don't smoke pot, but I respect the right of any American to do so.
Oh, last thing, Rick Perry started out as a Democrat. He switched parties to follow the money.

Then he needs to go back. Hell while we are at it lets just decriminalize all drugs. For that matter legalize all drugs, tax them the same as tobbaco and alcohol. That way you kill two birds with one stone. More revenue for the state, and put the drug cartels and gangs out of business at the same time. Not to mention everytime someone dies of a drug over dose; one less loser that we have to deal with.

Some might say you're advocating a socialist agenda(free education and healthcare). College is capitolism/elitism at work. Before you get upset, I was referencing the ivy league etc..
Second part of my post is not a response to Fed, but others who will be offended.

Maybe alcohol should be part of the conservative platform too. Take away people's right all recreational drugs(alcohol).

Free education and healthcare in the 21st century should be a right, not a negotiation... or something used to define the political Left or the Right.

My views fall on no side alone... I am for what is best for my country, the people, the animals and the plants that call it home.

We already have these rights! Anyone can go to the doctor or enroll in college. Just pay for it yourself!

I paid my way through college by working 35 hours a week in a crappy job on weekends and evenings. I did it without borrowing a nickel. As a result, I have made much more money than my peers for decades. I can afford to retire early and get all of my lost weekends back. I pay for all of my dr appointments and my insurance out of my pocket.

It can be done. You have to make sacrifices. It should NOT be free. Just do it.

Two opposing views, both have merit. One is based on "utopia" and one is grounded in reality.
