My cousin, Sheriff Mark Gilliam of Aransas County died today in a car accident.

I have some very fond memories of him... we spent a lot of time together when I was a kid.

He was a very good man.

I read his bio. Seems like a good man. I'm sorry for your family's loss.

Yes, he was a pretty good guy... always happy, always had a joke to tell or a wild story to relate.

I'm sorry we let distance come between us lately... I have not seen him in several years.

I remember him carrying me around piggy-back through the woods around my grandmothers house... we had a good time together in our younger years.

Many days he and I would sit around with our grandparents out in their front yard eating watermelon in the summer time.

From what I heard he was just driving down the road, swerved and hit an oncoming vehicle.

Not sure what made him swerve... he was a very good professionally trained driver... so I can only imagine until we hear.

Maybe he was having a heart attack... maybe it was just a momentary loss of concentration... who knows.

You never know when you are going to leave this world.

So how about we declare this a no flaming HF zone and everyone tell your story about your family/distant family member you didn't get to say good-bye to for whatever reason. We've all experienced it: disagreements, grown apart over time, etc.

I had no problems with Mark at all... he and I always got along well.

Every time I saw him it was always a positive experience.

I've got absolutely nothing bad to say about him... and if I did I would not say anything at all.

I liked his mother a whole lot, still love his sister Dianna... spent a summer with them in Rockport one year.

He took me to get my hair styled... had it feathered back... that was the style then... back when I had hair.

We went scuba diving one day in the Gulf... saw a Hammerhead shark, I wanted out of the water right then and there... never will forget that.

I was probably 11 or 12 years old.

I worked for Mark until Bill Mills to over. Forceably. Mark loved Rockport and its people. He grew up in a town and protected it then protected the county. All to have them stab him in the back and cast him out over the dishonesty of a person running for Sheriff. Sad. May he rest in peace. We will send him off in style. People will talk about it and be assured his enemies wil be taken back at the show of Honors.

It's really sad that someone with so much love to give like Mark had... is just shoved to the side by greedy and corrupt individuals.

I don't think he ever recovered from that.

He was the best Sheriff Aransas County ever had... and I'm not saying that just because he was my cousin... it's just the truth.

Mark was a good man and unique individual! He gave me my first position in law enforcement as a Deputy 01/2006 - 10/2007. He and his wife even opened their home(s) to me, when I needed a quick place to stay while serving the Department. I had the priveledge of seeing him interact with "his people",(county residents). He was always upbeat and seemed to have a true passion for his job and had a real zest for life! He will be missed...

Thank you to all the kind people who have spoken warmly of Mark.

It's hard for me to believe he is gone.

Tell the people you love that you do... you never know when they might leave this world... or you.

I went to the viewing of a very dear friend today. It was beautiful but it hit me very hard. He always made me laugh and never let me fail. His wife vickie asked me where my dog Chancey was..because Mark used to babysit her at the Sheriffs dept. He used to tell everyone she was the new drug sniffing dog. Another time they were doing a sting on dog fighting rings and asked me to bring chancey to have the deputies feel how sweet the connection is with animals and how what they were doing was more than just a crime. He Loved Chancey so much. Not ever did he say goodbye without say I Love You. Mark had a way of connecting with everyone he met. I miss him so much. If you can, come by and pay your respects to a man that left this world much too early and sure made it a better place. Today the funeral was beautiful and all of the stories seemed to really bring his spirit alive. I sure needed that. I got to spend some time with his dad Howard and his sister Diana. How blessed they all are to have someone so wonderful in their family. But anyone who was a real friend to Mark he treated as family.God be with you my friend. Rest In Peace. I Love You my Friend.

I met Mark on several occasions, when I was a Winter Texan. Great guy with a sense of humour. He would play his saxophone every Christmas for us at Lagoons RV Park. He always had a story to tell us. Sad to hear of this accident, taking his life.
