The gun range needs to be downrange from the downtown mall so that local police can sharpen their skills just as soon as they leave the facility.

No those new gates were put in for logging. The range would be on the old keene landfield that is now unusable for anything else. If you turn down esmont road it is a couple miles down on the left. Most people don't even know there is an old dump there.

It's unfortuante that the few people opposing this range have stirred up a public frenzie through dishonesty. 4,000 rounds a day is completely false. If that were true the police departments around here would completely out of ammo is about 30 days. This range would probably be used about 5 times a month on week days when most people are at work. Night firing would happen about 5 times a year. This range was needed 15 years ago. It's shame a large group of citizens like this have turned their backs one the people that protect them.

Ask yourself this question: If you are in the mall and someone starts shooting, do you want an officer that has fired his gun once a year for about 200 rounds shooting past you and your family at the shooter? Or do you want an officer that shoots his weapon 4 times a year for about 1200 rounds? This range will allow officers to train for real life situations. Shooting from the ground, from barricades, from behind patrol cars and other real life terrain. Not just shooting in a straight line at paper inside an indooor range.

Don't be worried about the noise & pollution...be worried about the idiots who would be using the range. They were asked to leave the Rivana club because of too many accidental discharges and unsafe practices. They need more safety training before they should even be allowed to handle a firearm. The attitude of this police force is the biggest issue...they think that they are above the basic safety fundamentals just because they wear a badge.

What's wrong with using a warehouse? Is it more expensive?

How can people expect the police to protect them if there isn't a place for the police to train?

police don't protect citizens they fill out reports and investigate a crime that was committed on you.Now...... you could say they protect you by getting the criminals off of the street but they are never around when someone is looking down the end of a barrel.

I think it's more important to have a meeting to oust Chris Dumler!

The County Police need to be proficient in gun use; how else can they protext the public in an emergency? To do this, they need a place to practice these skills. Some have suggested the State Police facility in Nottoway, VA. This is a 200-mile or so round trip, plus visits would have to be carefully scheduled so as to not conflict with other users; so Nottoway is out of the question. There has to be a readily-available local facility. Noise-abatement and bullet-containment will require a little extra expenditure, but can be accomplished.Let's be reasonable, and give the Police the facility they need to protect us.

I don't want to be within 10 miles of these guys shooting. I have a buddy that was almost killed by these guys "practicing". Your average hunter does not practice at all hardly and can outshoot almost any cop. WTF??? Let these guys travel elsewhere to do their little training, maybe it will keep some of our local people alive!

Oh really? Like the woman shot in the head by a hunter 10 years ago off Rt 20 north while standing on the power line right away? Or how about the won shot in the chest in her yard in Glenmore from a sray bullet that was not fired on an actual range. Those guns weren't fired by police. Let's here about your buddy's story? I like to know the facts.

I would just like to know the facts? What is the cost of the old plant in scottsville, what is the cost of using other facilities near by,how many times are police reqired to train, etc. With an economy so tight on most people we need to figue these things into the deal.If the plant in scottsville could be bought at areasonable price and set up for use would not this be a more reasonable option? Our BOS needs to post the facts about these so the public knows the whole deal! After all BOS was elected to represent the public not rule us!AS FAR AS THESE PEOPLE FROM WAY AWAY FROM THE SHOOTING RANGE ARE CONCERNED WOULD YOUR OPINION BE DIFFERENT IF IT WAS IN YOUR BACKYARD WHERE YOUR CHILDREN AND
PETS PLAY AND LIVE?

Drifter, here are the facts I know. They are not all the facts, but what I am about to write is true. I live in the Scottsville area so this does effect me too.

1) this range will not be used every day, probably about 6-7 times a month.
2) the range will be constructed in a safe noise reductuion manner
3) there will be no pollution from this, atleast no more pollution that is already present in an unlined old landfield that cannot be used for anything else.
4) there will be future public safety training on site for fire and rescue on the same site which is needed.
5) An outdoor range would provide more training needs as SOUTHERN ALB CITIZEN stated above.

I don't blame anyone for being concerned about this range and DRIFTER is right, the facts should be presented. Please don't believe the lies mailed out on the petition card. A few very wealth landowners are trying to munipulate you with false information.
