Gee, where are all the people who usually bash Cuccinelli about "prosecuting researchers who use public funds for research" and "the sanctity of academia"? Why don't the heavy-handed prosecutors just leave this esteemed researcher alone in the hallowed halls of intellectualism?

If he were staff, he would have been canned immediately. I realize that faculty are the engine behind UVA but for heaven's sake start holding them accountable!! Central offices just cave in whenever a faculty member complains about anything. They make a lot more than we do - why are they held LESS accountable for their actions???

This is the second time, he was charged back in the 80's with using ROMAC funds for his personal use. UVA just let that go by.

If the "esteemed researcher" is indeed guilty of defrauding anyone and/or use of the institution's capital for his own private gain, then he gets thrown out of the "priesthood." Real academics are pretty touchy about that kind of thing. But don't confuse that with thinking that the _organization_ itself won't sweep things under the rug given the chance (as maybe they did back in the '80s, but I have nothing but the note entered here).

This is a whole world apart from Cooch going on a witch hunt because he's so mindbogglingly dumb and partisan that he thinks all of the climate change stuff is some sort of "liberal hoax." (I've still never heard a rational and sensible explanation for what interests would produce such a widespread, global conspiracy. But we have a clear and easy one for the climate change skeptics. Go figure).

And to whatever poster said something really strange like "they" make a lot more than "we" do. I don't know who the "they" and "we" are. But the vast majority of faculty are not in any way rolling in the big bucks. News reports might sometimes give that impression - but then it just becomes funny to me how picky people get about which news they take as "fact" and which they call partisan drivel from yet another mythical cultural boogey-man - that ooooohhh - "liberal media"

A staff employee would have been thrown out so quick it wouldn't be funny, and the person that caught them would have got a reward. The entire situation changes depending on how high up you are on uva's food chain. The state would be surprised if they did more investigating in this area!

No. I don't even work at UVA or have any formal connection to it.

Not everyone thinks through the tiny, little microscopic keyhole that comes from their own tiny little narrow self-interests, as learned through their own tiny, little, narrow experiences as a window on the world.

I do hate those parts of our culture that are completely anti-intellectual. Hate on Universities and the professors if you want. But if you do you're hating on the whole basis of the knowledge that supposedly makes the US such a great place. Whatever you want to celebrate about it, its a world brought to you by people who are basically "college professor" types. So why people hate on them so much, I can't say. All I have to go on is to presume ignorance.

You obviously are not very familiar with the current state of higher education in our community or, for that matter, this country.

It is a sad situation, I concur. But do not mistake push-back, mistrust and rebellion for ignorance.
