Gee, genius, it could be 'cos Albie sends millions of dollars to Cville from revenue sharing arrangements. Privately, Albie residents spend a lot more than that in Cville. Perhaps--if you were educated in city schools--Albie should be sending more millions to the city to assist in remedial spelling and grammar programs.
I will wave to you next time I see you drooling in the back of the short bus!

You must be one of those Albemarle County elitists that know nothing about nothing...and to make fun of the "short bus" shows your true character moron! You probably do not even know the history and meaning of the revenue sharing agreement, like most "Albie" residents. They just think that the money is given to the city for joint services but in reality is was done long ago because you would've and could've been a city resident!

The article states that the homeless believe that they are the same as the Salvation Army bell ringers and should be given the same courtesies. They obviously haven't looked into a mirror in a very long time. The Salvation Army is soliciting donations to help those who are less fortunate to get back on their feet. The homeless on the downtown mall are soliciting donations so they can stay off their feet.
Very big difference, I would say.
Liz, you are exactly right. As a downtown merchant I am familiar with the individuals who brought this suit (under Mr. Fogel's guidance). They are already provided for quite comfortably with monthly disability checks, monthly food stamp allotments, free food and shelter at the many soup kitchens and shelters around Charlottesville, free medical care, and on and on. With most of their needs met any money that you might give these "poor unfortunates" will be spent on booze, drugs, cigarettes or lottery tickets. Whereas, the money you drop in the Salvation Army kettles will only be used to provide direct services such as food, clothing, etc. to those in need. For Mr. Fogle to liken the two is ridiculous.

OK, if it is their legal right to panhandle, then let's make it a crime to give them money.

In addition to your $200 a day do you also get to keep your tax free disability check, your EBT (food stamp) allotment, your waiver of all medical bills at UVA hospital, your free bus pass and your free cell phone, like these guys do? Would the local courts give you a free get-out-of-jail card because you are a perpetual public nuisance. Would they ignore all the fines and court costs levied on you that you refuse to pay? And if you were to take a legal challenge all the way to the U.S Supreme Court would your attorney tear up your bill too?

Seeing what happens in this city is convincing me that we working people are really the idiots and these five bums are pretty darned intelligent.

Well, if it is elitist to want people to communicate effectively, then paint me as such! As for the revenue sharing agreement, I do know full well the history of same, and it is time to rescind it. BTW, I am glad to see Cville has $3,500,000 extra in its budget. What do you think they should do with it?

And how could I "know nothing about nothing" when I am so successful?

I wish the Charlottesville Community had the opportunity to review the backgrounds (locally and nationwide) of Mr. Fogel's plantiffs.

More than likely, there would be greater support to restrict panhandling and the repulsive behaviors that one sees daily on the Downtown Mall!

Mr. Fogel, most City Councilors, and even the local courts believe that it is OK for some panhandlers do the following:

Occupy most the benches - Cursing in front of families and children.

Urinate on themselves and the benches for the next unlucky person or child to sit on.

Cause cafe patrons to leave or avoid dining at popular Downtown Restaurants.

Rack up thousands of dollars in unpaid court fines!

Bottonline: City Council is not going to act until the meals tax revenue dries up, more businesses are forced to relocate, and the citizens start electing leaders who put the community first, before their social causes.

Well I would bet that lots of traditionally hot places will freeze over before any of the ding dongs running the city will make any changes to the current situation.

He was smart enough to be allowed to serve 2 terms as the American President....light-years ahead of you I would say and certainly better than your little king who is there now.
