Was it a bullet or the shell casing that was retrieved from the utility pole? Shell casings are ejected from the side of the pistol as the semi-auto reloads, and don't have enough energy to penetrate a utility pole.

Obviously it was a bullet. Whoever wrote the article either made a mistake or really doesn't know anything about firearms.

Would have been funnier if they said that they found a casing in a pole fired from a revolver.

So a man was protecting himself from a bully and was shot by a cop in the process? Sounds like someone is going to get a large check from the city of charlottesville!

The story doesn't say that at all. The reporting says that he WAS jumped, and then shot one of the persons responsible. That sounds to me like vengenance, not self defense and that the officer probably saved a life by stopping the man from finishing him off.
