I find it interesting that no one has ever presented the facts in this ongoing debate. What was the school budget 10 years ago? For each of the last 5 years? Now what about enrollment? Where was that 10 years ago, and for each of the last 5 years. Now on to staffing: what were the numbers of staff 10 years ago and for each of the last five years - and break that number down by teachers, aides, admin, etc. Then take into consideration the changes in the economy over that same time period. Almost every person I know is making the same or LESS than they were five years ago. Almost everyone has suffered the loss of property value. And these are the people expected to fund the education system with their taxes. It is not always about how much it TAKES to make something work - it is about making something work with whatever is AVAILABLE. Someone, please, give us some accurate, unbiased numbers from reliable sources, so we can all have some INFORMATION to work with.
Don't rely on someone else to give you this information. Come to the School Board and BOS meetings and get informed!

The report is quite misleading about the game's purpose though. The "Stars & Stripes" game is a long standing tradition. It is not new due to funding issues JUST for this year. Its been around for a long time.

Thanks SilenceDoGood....this is true. There are so many incorrect assumptions made by people who are not informed.

You cannot tell me that the schools would fall apart if we cut a reasonable 20% of their budget! The kids would still learn with an extra kid or two in the classroom. The teacher might have to trade down from a BMW or Volvo to a Ford (and actually support America) but they would not starve.
There is a ton of waste and excess that could be cut from the schools!
You are part of the problem...spreading such trash. You are a fool.

Please don't insult teachers. If they choose to drive a BMW, they probably live in a trailor. It's ok. They have to make a choice. Just like in Grundy, the coal miners would choose housing or cars, or boats. It's a choice. Please spare me your analysis, teachers don't make that kind of money. Haha.

You cannot say you have cut to the bone when you are paying teachers over 60 thousand! No teachers should be paid over 40 thousand when real people are hurting from high taxes!

Are you saying teachers are not real people? And how do you come up with a figure like 40 thousand? Also, keep in mind that these teachers are also paying the high taxes as well!
You people are fools!

Hi Concerned. I would if I thought I could get the information I am talking about from a board meeting. I think those numbers would need to be researched. Probably a freedom of information request would have to be filed.

You are right. 40k is probably way too high, but realistically you have to start cutting somewhere. Cut them all to 40k this year, and then next year 35k or 32k. After that, you can finally get down to reasonable pay numbers.

Did you go to Fluco schools? Perhaps we should throw more money at them.

imbiciles = imbeciles
administraded = administrative
salarys = salaries

You may enjoy giving your money away, especially to part-timers that do the absolute minimum they can get away with, but I do not. My taxes are way too high and overspending on schools is the biggest reason.

Those of you that are discussing teacher salaries, do you know what the average salary is for the state or country? Have you tried teaching? Walk a mile in the shoes of a teacher and let's see if you can even do it!

You want some cheese with that whine? Anybody can teach, the government already has your agenda laid out for you. All teachers need to be good at is babysitting.

Your taxes are too high? Do you live in Fluvanna? You have some of the lowest taxes around. And, again, teachers are paying those taxes too. Would also love to know your profession.....or maybe you are retired with no kids in the school system.

Not whining, trying to educate and I am not a teacher. The government says what you have to teach but they do not tell you how to teach it, how to work with the child who is reading below grade level or the child who is brilliant. Now lets talk about babysitting... How much do you want paid to babysit a bunch of hormonal preteens? You could not pay be enough money to spend 7.5 hours with 25 of them. Again go and spend a day in a classroom.

Tax Rates will have to rise over 25% just to cover the huge increase in spending the schools are demanding. We need real Republican solutions in November to deal with Fluvanna schools and the constant demand to spend and spend!

25%? Are you kidding? Again, a falsehood. These posts that spread wrong information just gather negative opinions of the school system. Get your facts straight, go to a meeting a find out the truth.

How about parents actually petition them to actually have school and teach! There is no snow or ice but I see the teachers have given themselves yet another paid day off while parents scramble for daycare! There is the outrage!
