Memorial Day,,

We still have men and women dying on the battlefield. There’s blood, pain, and fear as they leave us. So enjoy the weekend as you will, but please don’t say,“Happy Memorial Day”.

As you probably know, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance of those in the military who gave the ultimate sacrifice protecting our freedom. It was created during the civil war; it started out as "Decoration Day". Graves would be decorated with flowers, etc. on that day. Soon after, President Lincoln decided that we should remember all that gave their lives for our country - not just Civil War vets. Therefore, the answer is "no". It is not appropriate to say, "Happy Memorial Day". I would suggest that if you were speaking with a military person or a veteran, say, "I remember and appreciate the sacrifices given". If you are speaking with a civilian, I would just say, "remember those who've fallen".

But aren't you happy that so many have sacrificed for YOU? I'm ecstatic that others were SOOOO giving and didn't think me me me.. Sorry about how you feel, but it will ALWAYS be a HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!! Why? Because I'm HAPPY my grandfather, cousins, brother, friends and in a couple years, my son have and will serve our great nation to provide you, and myself, the great freedoms we take for granted!

I do believe we say Happy Veterans day because that's the day that we are glad that we made it home alive. Memorial Day is for the ones that didn't. There is nothing happy about that day. I served from 1964 to 1968. When did you serve?

You have your view of Memorial Day, and I have mine.. I was unable to enlist due to medical reasons.. And I hate it! But to remember and not be Happy?? Hmm... I'm sure many feel the way you do and I KNOW that MANY MANY feel the way I do too. We need to agree to disagree.. But for you to throw your views at everyone, you have to accept the views of others.. I have been lucky enough that all my family and friends have returned home from each deployment.. And we DO remember those that have fallen, but I will ALWAYS say HAPPY Memorial Day, because we would NOT be where we are as a country if NOT for those sons and daughters that gave the ultimate sacrifice! I'm not blind to what we celebrate, for I have nothing but respect for every member of our service, no matter what branch!

Oh, and thank you for your service!
