wreck at 101 light

They have flashing lights and rumble strips to let you know that there is a light coming up. People don't pay attention. If people don't pay attention, what good will it do to add more signage or turn it into a 4 way? It has to start with the guy or gal behind the wheel.

If you run red lights there is a pretty good chance that you are going to end up in a bad situation. Hope everyone is ok.

But this intersection has been the site of at least 4 fatalities since the early 90s. There is something wrong with the design. I don't think they were both on the same road. Maybe, but I don't think so.

You can't see coming into the intersection so if you are on 101 and someone is south on 31 and someone has messed up they can't see each other so everyone keeps going at the same speed. If I were stopped at a stop sign and someone is about to run the other stop sign there is a good chance I will see them and stop and maybe shoot them the bird. Even if they do hit at least only one is traveling at speed so you have less impact.

I drive through this intersection up to 4 times a day if not more for over 10 years now. I have seen so many accidents there and still don't understand how they happen, but accidents are called accidents for a reason. I will say that I heard that in this accident both were traveling on the same road and one crossed the over and hit the other, so this had nothing to do with the light if that's the case. When the light is red and changes to green, I make sure the other traffic is stopping before I go. They have made so many changes already to this intersection over the years. I'm not sure a four way stop will even help.
I am the aunt of the children involved. My sister in law was driving on 101 going home and the other car was coming from Glasgow so they were not on the same road.

31 is a federally designated highway, so it is unlikely that it will ever be a 4-way stop. As Patriot Dad mentioned, there are already rumble strips and flashing lights in place to promote safety.
I've heard several concerns about green lights not working right, so it would be a good idea to test that issue and perhaps re-time the signals to give a little more cushion.
Let's remember that many prayers were said for the victims of this accident, and it would seem they have been answered. It could have been much worse.

The problem is that people traveling on 31E don't expect to stop at the light. It's in the country. I believe if we reduced the speed limit to 35-45 on the one mile approach to the light, and enforced it, it would help tremendously.

This is a very good idea. I also think they should put even more rumble strips in. My question is how the heck do people not notice the ones they have and slow down?

Sounds like a great idea to me. Let's poll the audience for feedback.

It would help if the hills on the corners of 101 and 31-E were cut back some. It's hard to see if anything is come through the intersection on 101 from Scottsville when you're coming up on it from 31-E.

I agree there needs to be more sets of rumble strips. One just make it seem as if you hit a rough spot in the road. They could also be a little deeper to get the driver's attention better. Whatever it takes to make it safer and save lives should be done. It scares me everytime I or my child drives through it. Let's petition for changes or improvements.

They were deeper in the beggining, everyone complained so they cut them down.

i dont know how much money insurance companys has spent on law suits because of people runing this light, but it would be cheaper in the long run for them to pay for overpasses to be put in at all of these lights on 31.but most important is no more loss of human LIFE.i know it i not the insurance companys place to pay fo overpasses, just saying it would be cheaper for them in the long run.im for overpasses...

A lower speed limit through the intersection area is a good idea. Traffic cameras could also be installed to snap a picture of speeders on that stretch of road so they would be ticketed.

The speed camera warnings should be posted on several speed limit signs approaching the intersection.

This seems like a relatively low # given the amount of daily traffic. Instead of spending thousands of dollars, why don't be advocate people paying more attention to what they're doing?

We aren't talking about a few dogs killed crossing the road. We are talking about human lives lost needlessly. Would you think it was a low number if they'd been your family members?

What value would you place on a human life? How many thousand dollars would a family member of yours be worth -- if you could prevent their death?

Besides, a lower speed limit through the intersection area is not a costly change to implement. Putting up a few new road signs and installing traffic cameras ought not be terribly expensive.

Causing drivers to pay more attention to what they're doing is precisely what these changes would do. Letting folks know for certain that they will get a taffic ticket if they speed through the intersection would get their attention.

You're adorable! You know there's a reply button that quotes what someone said, right? Any time we get behind the wheel of an automobile, we assume the risks and responsibilities associated with that.
