I personally know that the band has struggled some this year but they have put in many hours of time practicing also. I believe all the directors and assistants have a job to do and have done a great job. Mr. Huff may be the one who gets the blunt of the blame when someone has a problem but I know personally he cares about these kids. They are wonderful in my book. Yea at times they may seem a little hard, uncaring or whatever but my kid has been in several years and I've been there and watched them practice and play most every time. They have approximately 40 new kids. You try having approximately 100 kids to pay attention, learn their music, learn how and where to march, follow directions, etc. If you don't enjoy playing in the band then quit. They don't need losers like you. You are only hurting the kids who do want to perform. Life can never please everybody but there is no sense in you hurting the others involved also. When you make the statement about the "band" that includes my kid and all the other wonderful students who are out there plus the parents who help, the directors, etc. It takes a major endeavor to do a performance and the band worked hard this last Saturday from 8 a.m. and returned home around 11 p.m.- a long day - but they are the dedicated ones. It takes a special person to want to commit to those kind of acedmics for our school. They not only do their competitions during the school year - they also play pep (football and basketball), concerts, parades, etc. Now thats committment!! Plus the parents work endlessly on consession stands, have equipment ready, feeding them, driving them, repairing uniforms, doctoring them, cheering for them, etc. For what - the satisfaction of watching their child. The way I look at it -- "one bad apple can spoil the whole crop." Are you the bad apple?? GO BAND!!

I was in the program long ago. It's the parents and the changing times that are ruining the program. The seniors are "supposed" to step up but get fussed at when the baby freshman complain to mommy and daddy. Parents get too into their cliques and insult visiting parents. There is a long list of problems with the band... but you can't make an accurate judgement unless you were a marcher, went to concert band classes, or are an active booster.

Personally, as a proud recent AC-S graduate and band member, I think everyone needs a lesson in school spirit and sticking with/supporting our programs no matter how much we think they "suck". Also, it's the beginning of the season, so let's don't get hasty with our judgements.

Yeah I agree outside. Remember when the football team was HORRIBLE. We stood by them, said it was a "building year" and now things are going decently. But like you said...it's the beginning of the season. We didn't get good untill the end a few years ago... Riverdance.:(

To Proud Band Mom and AC-S Alumnus, I think you are right on the money! I wouldn't have Mr. Huffs job! My child is in the band and there are some problems but they are fixable! Mr. Huff has pressure on him to win. His problem is how to motivate these teenagers who have for the most part, been taught that they can get something for nothing. He has to do this and keep the parents off of his back too! There is no disipline or team work or motivation. Look at the competitions, the parents don't even sit together!

He also has a problem communicating his thoughts. A mom looked at me during his speech and said "I dont think this is going over too well."

To the poster if this comment, be quiet! Its people like you that make marchers feel like crap.

Silly Scottsville Girl said we stick by major sports when they fail, so why don't we have the same respect for the band and their coach.

Mr. Huff has had many health problems lately and his father has recently died. So he can not always be there. Not to mention they have 40 new marchers so the band is trying the best they can.

Because you know the band camp schedule so well you must be directly involved with the band. And for you to critize something that you apparently are somehow involved in... thats just sad.

So I will conclude by saying again, that you need to be quiet.

I would love to see all of you naysayers take Mr. Huff's job. He's a man who cares dearly about his students. This is very comparable to football. Now that the football team is winning everyone is jumping on the boat. The stadium is fuller than it has been in the last 2 or 3 years. Now that the band is struggling everyone is willing to give up on it. I think we need more supporters and less (yes this is a nice little pun) sunshine patriots.

I think "sucking" is too strong of a word. Though the band may not be doing as well right now as in the past few years, they are certainly not sucking. It is my understanding that this year's field show is a difficult one. I am a band parent and, yes, it's nice when they are bringing home the shiny trophies, but lets remember that that's not what being in band is all about. These students are being taught discipline and what it means to come together (win or loose) as a team. This is something they will take with them long after they graduate. No matter how good or bad they do this year you will find me up in the stands cheering them on and proudly wearing my Patriot Band t-shirt!

Dearest Student,
I dont know or care if you are in or involved with the band but you shoud know that forums are a space of freedom for us to discuss things. I invite you to comment but your critical judgement upon my or other posts is done in ignorance. Why dont you check out other forums specifically about Marching Band, Band, Or even about The Patriot Marchers. You will see things on some sites that will make you sick because they will completely disregard feelings and make "marchers feel like crap." Wake up and smell the band field are you that naive to think that Everyone is going to sit and diss on you. If youre an insider I especially challenge you to own up to you mistakes and hold others responsible for thiers because it is the politically-correct,watered-do wn spirit that has sullied the name of the AC-S marching band. If you can honestly defend laziness as well as you just did why dont you dind a job as a union leader. You all come from greatness and in the end you can still fight for it... but thats just it. Want it. Want it so bad you can almost taste it. Then push anyone in your way and sieze the victories that band has yet to see. OPEN YOUR EYES. Talk to your seniors, they hate it. Talk to your juniors, they remember better days as well.
But most of all remember rain or shine, well be there to support you.

"Our school marches forward onward, fighting for victory"

Hey Grow up, I understand what you're saying and agree with some of it. Ask a band member what some of the bands problems are and they will tell you. Huff is doing (I think)the best he can, with what he has, where he is! I don't think "Student" was defending laziness although I have seen the band members work in some very unfavorable conditions and work hard when they were there. As parents, WE should require more of our kids but, we should require more from our teachers as well. I remember Mr. Bonds! I think every kid hated him and that hurt the bands motivation. Good decision making is very important.

continued...we should never celebrate mediocrity or settle for less than our best. These things should be taught to our kids too. We become complacent and our kids see that! We have to set the example and the requirements. Teach our kids that hard work and sacrifice will pay off. As being our kids, we want them to have a happy, stress free life but to think that if they do, it will make them a better person is wrong thinking. They have to go through trials and hard times to learn and grow. We need only to support them then and offer encouragement. We as parents are to blame as anyone else. As I said in my first post, the parents wont sit together at the competitions.

I think alot of the bands problem is that they are lazy, and some have severe attitude problems, it was probably for the best that did lose the last two tournaments, maybe that will give them a reality check, I watched them the other day and they seem to be focusing better. When you tend to think your better than everyone else, you tend not to try your hardest. I will be cheering them on tomorrow. GO PATRIOTS!!!

It's pretty ridiculous to blame Mr. Huff for an unsuccessful first competition.

This year is largely rebuilding for the AC-S marching band with such an onslaught of freshman and the loss of several seniors. Likewise, has it ever occurred to you that the first marching band competition (unless you're from say, Adair or Jefferson counties) is usually pretty tough on south central KY bands.

Also, why waste our energy trying to figure out WHO lost the competition for the band when we could be busy encouraging them to do better next time?

Until one actually spends their time helping the band at practice or competitions or actually makes it through a grueling, 4-minute energetic, LOUD show, they have NO ROOM WHATSOEVER to comment.

(By the way, only true 'bandies' would get the Adair/Jeffersion references. Kthx.)

First of all, as a former ACS band parent, I can tell you with 100% certainty that Huff may not be the only problem with our band but he is the biggest. I would not have his job either and I do agree completely that it is a thankless and difficult position but his sullen, moody and love you today, hate you tomorrow attitude are HUGE problems. Mr. Huff is more concerned with appearances (his and the bands!) than he is with team spirit. As long as they are large in #'s and look good arriving he continues to feel successful. He is very immature and most definitely allows his personal life to affect his judgment and his position disallows that. Now to address an earlier post about "Mr. Bonds". If the person you are referring to is Corey Bonds, ACS band alumni, my child was there when Corey was marching and I know for a fact that the reason kids had for disliking him was the fact that he expected them to come to the field with the same committment and passion for what they were doing as he did. If not, then what were they there for. That was his BIG "sin". Which brings me to the other "biggest" problem with our band. There are too many kids in band who are there because of the wrong reasons. Band is notorious for going and doing more than anyone else in school and it is a way of getting away from home with your friends alot and unfortunately that is the motivation for a good # of these kids every year. Unfortunately, this year there are more than usual in that catagory along with all the new marchers. BUT, Huff has been in this situation before and he handled it no better then that he is this year. Until they voluntarily reduce the size of the band and audition these kids (tryouts) for dedication and excellence (not going to happen) you are stuck with what you get.

With my increasing attendence to band functions I am starting to believe that it is also a sign of the times. No one cares about anything as strictly these days.

The staff are all bickering, the kids are just apathetic, and the parents behave worse than the children sometimes.

Who knows when or if it will ever change.
