So theres a rumor going around that Brent Comer, principal at Vienna Elementary, is starting his own charter school? Normally, I'm not big on rumors but I've heard this one from some district teachers. If this is true, this is a huge slap in the face to the great community of Vienna.

No offense here. Like you, I like Brent as a person. But I am sad and a little offended if this is indeed true. It would be turning his back on us. Vienna was a great school before he came and will continue to be so. I'd give the name of the teacher that told me but I was told this isn't common knowledge yet. I don't want to get anyone into to trouble, but still. I need to find out what's happening to my child's school. Thank you for your help. In sure others would like to know too.

People- he can not start his own charter school. A charter school is a special public school that is geared toward specific students- for example there can be music ones, math ones, science ones, troubled students etc. I don't think that Scott county would have the money nor the student population to start one and it would start at the school board level-not at the teach gossip level. If he was going to start a school it would probably be a private school. And I think that if he looked at the lack of success of private schools in Scott County, he would be planning it in another area.

Actually, I've had confirmation about this now from several reliable sources. Comer is planning to leave Vienna and start his own school. Apparently former school board member Terry Jones and him have been working on doing this. The board doesn't have to be involved....they are breaking away from the district. Charter or public, I'm not sure, but he is leaving. The money would come from outside sources....the district doesn't pay, but they could lose money if children attend the new school. I find this to be appalling considering how much emphasis there is on community from this school. I hope Vienna bands together and shows that we are a great school and community, no matter who our principal will be. Vienna is one of the best ranked elementary schools in Southern Indiana. It's been that way through Mr. Hobbs, Mr. Lohman, and Brent. It will continue to be.

I also can confirm this is true, with a little more insight. A charter school can be started by anyone as long as it is approved at the state level. There is a board of people in the scottsburg / austin area who have filed an application for a charter school with the state. Mr. Comer will apply to lead the school if it is approved. His involvement with the board is not known and I believe the Terry Jones part of the rumor is just that a rumor. I see this an a chance for students and parents in Scott County to show their love for your school system. Time to stand up and let people know that no one person is larger that the group as a whole. Scott Dist. 2 is making great strides to give the students in our community the best possible education available. A charter school will just hurt that effort in the form of pulling money away from our school system, the state has already done that so many times in the last few years. Teachers, parents, and staff make our school system great. No one person can make a school great, time for the community to get behind our schools and show the support for the people who work with our kids everyday. The effort to shut down this charter school needs the entire community involved. Scottsburg has always stepped up when it needed to to make things right I'm sure this will not be any different.

Inspired! You definitely have made me that. I completely agree with you. This district has made tremendous strides in the past few years. We've seen notable improvements at Scottsburg, Johnson has been scoring well, and Vienna and Lexington are top notch academically. Many other counties have had to close schools, lose teachers, and cut programs. This county has managed to avoid a lot of the problems that others have not. We should be rallying around Vienna and supporting that school. To think that someone from the community would attempt to hurt such a great school is really sad. And if what abc is true that part of this comes down to money, then shame on him. The students at Vienna deserve someone who has their best interest in heart. Hopefully they will eventually get a principal that feels that way.

I'm also hearing that Tony Bennett, yeah, that Tony Bennett, was supportive of this. If he's the man running education in the state, why would he want to try to fix something that's no broken?

This is all truth--the principal no longer stands behind the students or staff. Several members of our family attend v-f and as the other poster said-he will tell you what you want to hear and then turn around and tell someone else another story-avoiding a resolution. We have been to the school on several occasions and excuses every time. Dissapointing to the teachers who do their best for the kids to find out their leader doesn't beleive in them. Lets trust our school board leaders to provide our kids with a principal as soon as possible. Is he staying if the new school doesnt go through? And is that fair to our students? What can parents do to find out the truth?

if so, he wouldnt do very good, dont get me wrong, I really like brent as a person, but as a principal, he will not stand up for anything, I know as a parent, I would call w a complaint wanting to have a meetin w him about what was going on, and he would pass me on to the teacher, I had talked w the teacher til i was blue in the face and got no where, and as i say brent as a person is great, and i think brent as a teacher would be great, but when it comes to conflict, he runs. so if he did, he would either need to have someone be in charge and face problems for him or it would not last long, but i will do some diggin for you and see if any of it is true. and if i said anything to offend anyone Im sorry,, but that is just my opinion.
AGREE-everything you said is true! That is his character-my family and student know that firsthand as well. I left there thinking I was the crazy one!!

This saddens me to no end! Both my daughters attended V-F during the Dale Hobbs years and absolutely thrived!! Back then, it was THE best school in the district. We are now trying to decide where to send my 5 yr old granddaughter and I'm not sure V-F is the best choice. She is very bright and I'm thinking academically, SES might be better for her.
Mr. Hobbs was the best principal V-F has ever had!

V-F is still a great school, but you can't go wrong with any of the elem. schools in the Dist. lex, Johnson, SES, and V-F are all full of great teachers and staff. I would feel comfortable sending my kids to any of the schools.

Does Mr Comer tell you where to work? Last time I looked its a free country and if he wants to do something different that should be his choice.

Taxpayers have been paying him to work for OUR students, not paying him to work against our taxpayer supported schools!!!Kudos to the community for realizing this is wrong! We pay him to support and encourage the teachers and OUR students, not work against them. Disapointing to say the least that he feels that way about the community/school administrators that has been feeding his family for many years.

Would you want one of your employers actively seeking to open up a rival company while he's on your payroll? Sure, Comer can choose what he wants to do...but he is contracted to work for the school and do the best he can for the students of Vienna. This isn't honoring that contract. So if he's got the right to make that choice, we have the right to note that he's duty was to do what he signed up to do. I feel like he's turned his back on Vienna and the entire community.

Brent Comer is a great guy. He can do whatever he wants, it's all business and it's silly to take it personal. Everything will be fine and work out just the way it should. If he is leaving VE then im sure the replacement will be great. Everything happens for a reason. Don't let this worry you. : )

Well said! Hopefully the ones in charge consider the taxpayers/parents interest. I agree, not fulfilling an obligtion to your employer is questionable. The students do love him. Hopefully all good teachers don't follow to the new school next year.

Thank you. And to Katie, this isn't a personal attack. I haven't heard one person talk about Comer as a bad person. As a person, he's a good guy. However, we are rallying around the school and question his decision. We can be civil enough to dislike his decision without attacking his character. I simply question his motives of abandoning Vienna, which, bluntly, is what is happening.

It is a free country and he could go anywhere that would take him but he cannot have a conscience if he says he does it for the students but he does not care for all the students if he's going to a charter school who allows only the students they want in it. More than likely they will be only the smartest financially stable students with no behavioral problems. It really makes him and those he takes with him, if any, look like money hungry SNOBS.
