My son was informed today that Scottsburg middle school will be on a year round schedule starting next year...does anyone know the actual dates? I think this will probably be an okay idea, but think we as communiity deserve to know the pros and cons about this by the ones making this decision because parents have to make arrangements for the care their younger children and plan work schedules. Thank you for any factual information pertaining to this.

If you want only factual information why wouldnt you do what most parents do? CALL THE SCHOOL!!!!!! instead of getting on a gossip site and ask?

Because you get straighter answers off of here! The schools response is that it is under consideration!! My son was told that is why the students had a week off for fall break)--trying to ease the new schedule in.Some people beleive there are good people on here with information that can be helpful--and questions can be asked to the proper people before decisions are made behind closed doors!

I agree. And this sight can be used for helpful information. Kudos to you Parent for looking into something involving your children. There are parents who could care less but like you I want to know the facts and get input from others :)

Hopefully caring parents will get the information needed soon..and the school gives us open opportunities to obtain information before calendars/schedules are voted in without our knowledge

If you are really interested in things like school schedules and other large things that go on like that - go to the school board meetings. There would be a lot of things that would have to change to get year round school that they control. Things like teacher contracts, budgets for the schools etc. And if you don't like the idea of year round school you can let them know. Depending upon an open posting forum for factual information is a really bad idea. Anyone can post anything they want here without even have to register their email address.

It depends on the schedule with Prosser vocational school. If Prosser chooses this schedule to accomodate the surrounding districts that are switching to the balanced calendar, then Scottsburg schools will have to change as well.School board meetings are a great avenue--but calendars are voted upon by the teachers commitees and the board just approves it. Why would anyone be opposed to this balanced school year opportunity?

Next school board meeting is Tues. Jan 10th at 6:00 at the district administation off next to Meyer Gym. A proposed school calendar will be discussed... but not voted on. The proposed calendar has school starting August 14, and ending the first week in June, pretty similar to this past school year. There was some talk at one time about a balanced calendar due to a state law that was trying to be passed that would not let school start until after Labor Day unless your school was on a balanced calendar plan. If the law was passed and the school was not on a balanced calendar school would have been in session until the end of June every year. So if you really want to be informed come out to the school board meeting, or contact you local school board member. Thats what their job is to serve the people.

Thank you for the info about the board meeting. This site can be used for good things also. It's your choice what you make of it.

Come on, you can't really expect to come to this site and expect the truth, do you? No offense, but that's being naive. This is an anonymous website that's full of unfounded facts and rumor mongering.

That said, if you want the truth on what's going on but don't want the administrator speak...ask a teacher. Ask several. If more than 1 gives you the same answer, take that as truth. Teachers won't give you administrator speak and they are usually told what's going on in the building.

And no, they will not be going to year round school. That is such a huge move they would HAVE to let parents know if that was even a consideration. But if it was, I'd be all for it. Studies show that kids retain more and get in trouble less if they are busy throughout the year instead of having 3 months off to get into trouble and fall behind.

Both my middle school students teachers replied that it is "under advisement". The office reply was the same! So who else do you think would know the answer?? Sites like this CAN be useful to get info out to people otherwise left in the dark about major decisions affecting our families. Just need heads up for child care issues!

School board meetings and agendas are posted at each school on the Thursday before the meeting on Tuesday. A list of days and locations should be posted on the school website, but as a general rule meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. All meetings a public meetings and usually last about an hour ad half.

I would also like to hear from educators their veiwpoint on this matter--maybe if we can get to a board meeting we can hear their professional opinions. I trust what the trained educators feel is best on this.

This is a stupid idea because if we have year round school students will barely ever get a break and will only have weekends to actually be kids. Because after school they will have so much homework they won't be able to do anything.

the way year around school is set up is you go 9 weeks, you have two weeks off. 9 weeks, two weeks off. summer break will be 8 weeks instead of 10 weeks.
