Equal distance from Birmingham (Al), Nashville (Tn) and Atlanta (Ga)., all growing urban and industrial centers.

Relieving pressure on the grid and production west of Nashville/Birmingham line (allowing Mepmphis and Saint Louis to draw a larger share of the power produced there).

Establishing Tennessee as the "line in the sand", stopping the southward expansion of coal pollution.

As a future inhabitant of the area, chronic bronchitis sufferer, and parent of an asthmatic child, I am pleased.

Good idea will take the water from the Tennessee river and forget about Georgia's border water war with Tennessee. Get serious ...... Alabama, Florida and Georgia have been fighting in court since 1990 over water. Georgia lawmakers say the boundary properly lies about 1.1 miles north of the current one, a move that would give Georgia access to the Tennessee River at Nickajack Lake in Marion County. Georgia is facing serious problems slaking the thirst of an increasingly dehydrated Atlanta region.

“They’ve been fighting with Florida,” Sen. Berke said of Georgia lawmakers.“They’ve been fighting with Alabama. They’re going to be fighting with us. We may as well get prepared for the long haul on dealing with this issue and on water conservation.”

So the TVA "boys" may need spend some dollar on an army of cooling towers, to do mostly aircooling, and preserve evaporation cooling for emergencies?

With the rates I'll be payin', they should be well able to afford it.

Historically nuclear power rates never go down in fact they go up to cover the price of the new one being built.

The desirability of nuclear power for powering a modern economy

and

the limitations of the US economic system of government-corporation duopoly

are 2 DISTINCT issues.

I don't mind rate increases, as long as they are below inflation level. Given that a Mustang cost 2,500 US$ initially, and it's now 25,000...

When the put the cable across the LI Sound our rates went up 125% in 7 months to pay for it. Guess what the Nuclear power people who gave the increase is one and the same. The cable one eighth the cost of a new power plant. Cross Sound Cable Interconnector Connecticut and Long Island, USA

Alabama Power wants double-digit rate increase that would take effect Oct. 9

Alabama Power, which currently provides steam to 19 buildings at UAB, is ending the school's contract in February 2013. The company is closing its steam plant downtown and its smaller Southside plant because they cost more to run than they bring in.

UAB currently pays Alabama Power about $7 million a year for steam, Baker said. The university also provides its own steam to about 26 other buildings.

Anyway,
Why would be the utility company be less greedy/overcharging if they'd be running coal/oil/gas plants?

And the cost of renewables will make the greediest utility board look like paragons of generosity.

The initial investment in nuclear more than coal,NG and others. Besides nuclear plant take longer to go online therefore it will be along time before it starts to make money.

Nuclear reactors take so long to come online because they are one of a kind custom licensed structures. if you made them smaller so that they could be built in a factory then these kind of start up costs can be under control. but that puts you up against "big nuke". Which gets the money from custom building a fueling reactors.

Still didn't get the answer why this is worse than a
"pump 'em full of soot for twenty years then we'll sell it to the chinks for full price", coal burning plant?

Well you got, me I am completely stumped. You should ask the lobbyist for coal on the Topix Mining Forum. I am sure thier are good arguements on both Nuclear and coal. Myself I like Geothermal for 10,000 years somebody has used that kind of energy, and I am yet to here any deaths.

Since geothermal power production uses steam and electricity, there will be deaths at a slighely higher rate than there are in nuclear power plants. A workman killed by a steam explosion or electrocution is considered local news unless it happens at a nuclear power plant.
