St. Stan's vigil marks 500th day

Full story: North Adams Transcript

This is the irony of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church: The church is supposed to close, but the community is only getting stronger.

My hat is off to the people involved with this project,it is high time someone stood up for the rights of the flock, these people need help from other churches, all members of the RCC should join these people, I am sure the Vatican is just waiting them out knowing that sooner or later they will give up. GO FLOCK GO

There is a story (don't remember exactly how it goes) about a man who sat quietly by while people around him lost their rights about a lot of things, and then finally the day came when his rights were at stake and no one came to stand up with him.
What would you do or what did you do when your church closed? Did you sit quietly by and let the diocese close it? or did you fight back?
"Hoora" to the vigilers. They're fighting back. I hope they win.

Faith is not a building. These people have possession of a building but no faith. They are to be pitied.

They have faith. If they didn't,they wouldn't be sitting in the church 24/7 for over 500 days. Would you ever do something with that much devotion or conviction? Apparently not. I pity you. You have no idea how strong their faith is. Go visit them and you will see.

I am not to into going to church right now, but I did go to Cathlic school, and still attend from time to time. I live right down the street from the church and always see the people going in and out of the church.

I thought about this as I drove by the other day. That these people must really love this church. I would be willing to help out with something if I could. It would be nice to see the church reopened and back to normal.

It's sad to see that the Vatican is in such bad shape that they need to close such beautiful buildings. Let the people have their church!!!

why doesn't the diocese establish st stan's as a Latin Mass oratory? They could contact one of these folks to staff it if they are short on priests! Many other diocese have done the same thing.

the bishop and the boil want only to collect money for the boil's mansion and get rid of The Polish beacause they are jealous.

St Stan could Get All The Priests that They Want.

But The boils and bishops cannot fill their collection baskets.

This is a perfect example of the polish vigilers mentality. They may say their prayers and have many devotions but they sure do not practice what God's teaches on love and forgiveness.

I get so sad when I read things like those written above by cheshire and Richard. The implication that Polish people are stupid, when our last Pope was Polish and the remaining church in town is named in his honor, is mean. At the risk of sounding insensitive, "cheshire" does not even use a capital letter when naming God, but perhaps he lacks formal education where such things are learned. That does not mean he's "stupid." I thought the days of ethnic stereotyping were, for most people, over. The vigilers DO practice what God teaches.

I've been wondering why ALL Catolics in Adams aren't standing TOGETHER in the effort to save a Catholic church. Seems like a closing is something to be accepted, as long as it's not MY church. Imagine the great message to ALL if people from PJP and other area churches worked TOGETHER to save St. Stan's!! Helping and supporting our brothers and sisters of St. Stan's would show a TRUE Christian attitude.

And where in that statement does it say that the writer is Polish and/or a vigiler. You have jumped to the wrong conclusion again; next time try jumping rope instead, it's not as hurtful.

Dear Wondering MY church was also closed - St. Thomas but as parisioners we were well aware that this was a necessity - mainly all the steep stairs for older people - no longer feasable. It, too, was a lovely church where my children made their lst communion and were confirmed and served on the altar. However I do support the vigil at St. Stan's. I hope they receive an answer soon and do not think for one minute that St. Stan's was closed so Fr. Dan could keep his rectory. That could and should be used for more than just a rectory for one priest but no one seems to be going along that line.

We are supporting the one remaining church in this town. It is you that have failed to do so. This hurts the people of ND more than what you know. You have constantly made remarks about how our church is unfit to continue. This has opened a deep scab that is not healing.

My point is, if ALL the town's Catholics banded together in support of St. Stan's, all hard feelings on both sides would be soothed. As far as PJP being "unfit" I don't know what you mean. I've not heard that said by anyone. IF you mean FINANCIALLY unfit, then I understand. The numbers speak for themselves. SSK vigil organizers have carefully followed the numbers, and it is perfectly clear that early predictions of financial difficulty for PJP have come to fruition. This was stated and proven at the beginning, but seemed not to matter to the Diocese.

You have watched the finances but have given no financial support to the parish. That explains everything. No one would feel welcome at St stans. You are all so ethnic and your own group.

curious - St. Thomas was MY original church, too, and was for many many years. There was no outpouring of concern when it closed, probably because the yoking of ST and ND and the popular Sat. 4:00 Mass at ND paved the way for its closing. A well-orchestrated series of events. With what has happened at SKK, I wouldn't be surprised if PJP found itself compromised somewhere down the line. There is a growing sense of sheep being led to the slaughter rather than led by a shepherd.

Concerning the "ethic" nature of SSK, there are MANY people in that parish who are not Polish, or only part Polish. Some support Catholic education and therefore support the church with the school. Others prefer it for other reasons, but that's irrelevant. A large group of people love that church, and the greater Church it is a part of.

When the people of the Polish tongue first came to Adams, they wanted to worship at a church of their language, as did the French and Irish. That is why the French church, Irish church and Polish church were built. I would venture a guess and say that not too many people from any of the above churches speak the language anymore; so please stop the Polish persecution. No one refers to PJP as the French church, do they?

Do not confuse the hatemongers on the blogs with real life. Most of the people here probably have no connection with the situation and just enjoy stirring things up.
