This program was enacted in 2010 supposedly for low income students, to protect them and be sure they received adequate nutrition or for students that just needed reduced prices. So now all students in Pulaski Co system are going to receive free breakfast and lunches regardless of their families incomes just so the schools can receive more federal money . They also want all to fill out a Household and Income Form (and they will strongly encourage you to fill it out),
making you feel guilty that you might keep schools from getting some freebie. I know there are needy people in this community but at least 40 percent are not. So in the long run is this really free? Kentucky is in a pilot program some say for one year, other sites say 4 years. Next year it will probably go nationwide. I don't know what price we will pay for this but I highly suspect more government nosing into our private lives and decisions. I think most people have the good sense to know if their children need assistance for meals at schools. Certainly all do not qualify for help. I just want to know how this went from helping hungry children to more federal interfering in our schools. Enough is Enough! When do we get our pride back?

The county paid thousands of dollars to collect money from parents who wouldn't pay. Collecting the money was as expensive as just feeding everybody. What little difference is made up in federal grants. It would be easiest to just say..if you don't have any money in the school lunch program, your kid doesn't eat that day but we could NEVER deny a kid a meal. In my day if your account was 0, you got a cheese sandwich and your parents got a visit from social services if it continued If you're on food stamps, the "free lunch" SHOULD come out of that money so lets say you get 400.00 in food stamps and you have 2 kids in the school system, while they are in school, you get 350 or whatever it costs per meal. To me getting paid to feed your family and then getting free lunches (and breakfast)too is double dipping.

Federal Grants don't last forever but giving freebies out never goes away. You get people getting used to not having to worry about lunch money for their kids and it will never go away. What happens when the federal money isn't there anymore? This law was not for all to get lunch free. It was to provide for children whose parents did not have the extra money. They are either trying to be sure no one is eating anything different than anyone else or policing what they are eating. Half of the food goes in the trash. Our county decided to take all the federal money they could get, which it is good in the short run but just wait and see. Oh by the way Pulaski Co school systems are having a meeting at the end of the month to discuss an increase in property taxes. I know there are a lot of people in this county struggling but the school system says 68% qualify for free or reduced lunches. I can hardly believe that. If that is true then we are in a lot of trouble in this town. We build new fountain squares, courthouses and a new library , we should have spent some of that money feeding our children instead of getting a federal grant for this too! Everybody has a cell phone, health care, free housing. There are less and less people working and less and less caring about what our country has turned into. Lord help us!

I'm just curious at what point in time and why did you come up with this idea or have you always believed that our nanny government should take care of us?

It's the Federal Government playing the role of Santa Claus. Everybody loves free stuff. That's how you become hooked. The cycle continues.

This a complete joke.... If the parents can't afford to feed their own children, then they need to be put into foster care. We have raised our kids and fed them and clothed them. We didn't get offered free lunches for them. Get real

How many years till the Federal Govt is feeding everyone in the US in a manner similar to this? We are already on our way to nationalized healthcare so, why not include food as well? Michelle Obama is already allowed to dictate what food is served in schools so, why not make her the national Food Czar and give everyone Food Stamps?

3, 2, 1 ...counting down till our resident liberal loons "judge" this post as negatively as their little fingers will allow. LOL!!!

So how is the food this year? Since Moochelle Obama decided to make school lunches healthier, the amount thrown away uneaten has grown larger. Is this true? My child is young and I pack his lunches so he can't tell me what the school lunches are like. I also had to fill out a form that told everyone In my households income and weird questions asking if my child was an immigrant , migrant or fostered..i wasn't really happy about filling out the form because I didn't think it was any of their business.

I've not seen any stories or heard about this on the news. The law that was signed 2010 did not say anything about this being free for all. It was supposed to be for needy children. Kids that really need the help. This is supposed to be a pilot program for 4 years but what happens after that, when everyone gets used to getting it free? What happens when the federal grant money runs out? Then the states will have it all in their lap and the TAXPAYERS will have to bear the brunt of it once again. The funny thing is this is not free to us taxpayers its politicians (yes in the school system too) getting what they want which is people believing they are doing good things for the ordinary people. Sooner or later all these programs will go down because the ratio of taxpayers and people receiving government help is going to become lopsided and its going their fast. They are going to try to take this nationwide next year. Where are all of our politicians and what are they doing. I have no respect for either side every politician is looking out for the next election or trying to get attention for themselves. They do not have the integrity to do what is the right thing. We need a hero in this country to turn it around but where are they?

foods at schools under Obama is a joke. all students will not get free lunches!!!!!!!!!!
if you have a daughter or son that has allergic reactions to some foods and you cant afford paying extra for non-allergic food, I pray for your kids especially for the ones that have to pay extra to see that their children are fed properly and safely. Obama doesn't care, he just wants his policy to go thru whether it is a good policy or not, and then take care of the problems, just like Obama's health care!we need change yesterday and where is the republican party at?????

If you complain about taxes now, just wait til they start putting kids in Foster care for missing the occasional meal. And talk about Government interference in people's family life. Who would make these decisions? How would the cases be determined? Plus, there are lots of studies that document that kids generally do worse in Foster Care, unless abuse was severe in their homes. And the welfare of the children should be paramount.
BTW, I've actually been a foster parent and actually have some first hand knowlege about this.
Foster care is already very expensive now while its reserved for the worst cases. Supervision is minimal, and it already costs a bundle.
Plus, its hard to get decent Foster Parents, even now with the current population. This would only get worse.
Plus, Foster Care is already a situation rife with possiblies for abuses which wuold only increase. Then there's the debate about so-called proper food. That in itself is endless
Besides all the extra expense for Foster care, people would go berserk. There would be riots in the streets.

If you hate the idea so much, then vote out the school board members who came up with this genius liberal plan to feed everybody. But for those of you complaining that the hungry kids wont eat the healthy food?? Pulease! If the kids are hungry, they'll eat what they're given.beggars..and they are beggars cant be choosers.

I pay enough school taxes to pay for hundreds of lunches a year, take a look at every bill you pay!
it has school tax on it. and I don't even have any children. if the parents cant pay for the lunch then let the child watch while the other children eat. by the way the county will come up with a county wide pet tax in 2015 after the 2014 election. Now that I'll be for if my pets can eat for free.

I really think that this was a good idea to treat all kids equal. This kinda speaks to all the children as to whom they are in a status way when some kids are paying while the less fortunate try to slide by without being noticed. The way it is now all the kids are the same going through the lunch line.

They were all the same anyway.they just typed in their number in and the bill was taken care of elsewhere. Not that "all being the same" is the way to go commie.
