I would just like to thank the latest handful of meat heads for helping betray the trust of the public we work hard to serve and for bringing yet another black eye to the brotherhood of firefighters (which I'm sure they claimed to be a part of). They should be ashamed of themselves for the choices they made, the damage they done, the fears they caused, the lives they put at risk, the embarassment to their families, as well as the position they put their (former) Fire Department in. Hang in there Chief Moyer & F.F.D., keep your heads high and keep on keepin' on!

I guess when you put out the sign for free help, you take everyone and this is what you can get. All the signs where there, everyone just opted to ignore them.

LOL they are getting closer to the Allentown corpertion that has prospered tremondously. They have the kingpin j.p.k. now they have to make him squell like the pig he is!

It's all fun and games till a firefighter gets killed. It's funny how everyone forgets that when they are feeling sorry for an arsonist

Hey birdie it's clear from the article that these are volunteer "firemen" not paid professional Firefighters. The paid guys don't like to set fires because they get paid whether they have to put them out or not.

that's just plain bull, because in Allentown they are all involved. It starts with fire officials than the code officials and mayor and his court jesters the legal help and its all over. The money is in everyone's pocket not were it belongs to go. This is the Allentown political machine at its best and if a silly rabbit can think this up who else will be arrested in the near future

They say they did it because they were bored, but starting fires is often indicative of underlying psychological problems and this type of behavior has been known to progress to other types of crime. All three should be given extensive psychological evaluations in order to determine whether they have the propensity to commit other types of criminal acts.

Why is this an ongoing issue with volunteer Firefighters? What kind of backround check is done. What kind of Phsycolgic check is done,Any? I understand the need for Firefighters is at an all time high. But come on. To just accept anyone who walks through the door is crazy! I have friends who have beeen Volunteers for over 20yrs. Even they are disgusted with the screening process. If its a cost issue, then take it before city council. If they refuse to find a way to help pay. Then suspend accepting volunteers. See how fast they change there mind. It worked for US!!!

You're probably right about the extensive psychological testing. BUT, that costs money. You know where I'm going with this........ These immature kids caused 2 million in damages. I don't think anyone is willing to spend one dime on them. The damage they did cannot be replaced. Don't you think there should be stricter guidelines to follow before they start. Maybe this fire station shouldn't take these kids so young. I know someone who is 17 and rides with the volunteer fire trucks in our area. I know he has a uniform, but I don't know what he does.(as far as his duties. If they do the same things as the older guys)
I do have a different opinion after reading what this chief said. That arsonists become firefighters not firefighters become arsonists. He made his poinjt with me. Too bad he wasted all his valuable time on these clowns.

Alot of stations today do not just take anyone who walks through the door. My volunteer station does a thorough criminal background check on all incoming new firefighters. The $20.00 fee is paid by the proposed member. Anything that shows up there, nixes being a volunteer with us.

The problem is when it comes to the junior firefighters. Junior members can start as young as 14. Because they are under 18 they have no criminal history to check, other than personal references they provide. These "boneheads" came into that station as juniors.

Keep your heads high Chief Moyer and fellow brothers/sisters at the Freidensburg station. A few bad apples don't spoil the whole bunch. Your time and talents as volunteer firefighters is still greatly appreciated by your community.

There is actual cases of arsonists who were convicted and still allowed back into the emergency services. I'm sure there are other criminals lurking in the shadows out there but they don't kill firefighters

Just so everyone knows there is now a law in PA that all new firefighters Junior/or Regular needs a criminal background check. Our company makes the applacant pay for this as do most companies. I really hate that this had to happen again and give the volunteers another black eye but remember 99% of us would never do that. The last thing I want to do is be up all night fighting a fire and then go to a full time job all day with no sleep. And as far as someone else said on here, go to city counsel thats a joke. City's, boroughs and townships are hurting for money and are doing all they can to just keep giving what they already do to the fire depts. People need to wake up and realize if they don't volunter (Not just as a fire fighter) and donate money to there local depts there taxes will sky rocket when we have to go to a paid dept. Then we shall hear even more crying!!!

They do background checks now but what about those who slipped through the cracks. I know of a department who lets a convicted arsonist run as an emt who stills shows up at fire scenes

It depends on the Fire Chief, and apparently this is a liability he has decided to take on.
