Ah, yes, the "Bridge to Nowhere", courtesy of Ted Stevens (repugnican of Alaska).

A little different than upkeep of the highways and bridges we presently have (although for how much longer is debatable).

I can't tell if this post is a parody or not...

You rich people won't like this but why don't we just increase the luxury tax? You buy a Hummer, you pay an extra say $2000 or so. You bought a Hummer, you can afford it. You buy a Cigarette, you pay an extra $3000, etc. The little middle class citizen needs to buy gas to get to work, they need to survive. You rich folk obviously are already throwing money around, you should pay more taxes. It would make me feel a lot better watching all those Hummer commercials if I knew that those rich drivers were contributing to the upkeep of our bridges and roadways.

The winter weather of Minnesota is far more severe than that of lower New York & Long Island, so I doubt whether we have to be as concerned with base bridge corrosion, as they would! However, I'm sure that we pay far more for upkeep & tolls as they, without seeing a dedicated portion of those millions, going into a (Repair Fund) which could not be touched except for that purpose!
The public is now paying approx. 1800% more in NY City tolls, than we paid as late as 1972, so the MTA should have more than a sufficient amount of money, to make routine repairs without hitting us up for added funds!

New article---"Scientist says bridge collapse caused by global warming"

I have reviewed Dr. Joseph Romm's paper on Global Warming and his observation that the collapse of the Minneapolis bridge was, in part, due to the effects of global warming.

Dr. Romm is brilliant and I agree with his findings but he simply did not go far enough to explain the direct connection between GW and the destruction. Since I am an expert in this matter of the effect of heat on bridges, I will explain.

Pidgeons are especially suseptible to heat and they hold heat more than any other bird. When they hold excessive heat, especially from global warming, they shit more, in fact 3 times as much ( prove this yourself if you doubt it--you don't see much pidgeon shit in the winter do you?).

Anyway, according to my research, there have been 2,311,684 pidgeon landing on that bridge EACH YEAR since 1989. That totals 41,610,312 pidgeon visits to date. It is well known that each pidgeon dropping weighs 32.6 grams but what is not known is that hot pidgeon shit expands in weight by a factor of 1,493 whenever the temperature exceeds 71.66 degrees farenhite. And, above 91 degrees that factor increases by 2.479%. Therefore, I calculate the the 193,402, 000 tons of hot pidgeon shit was the real cause of the collapse and if it wasn't for global warming, those pidgeons wouldn't have held the heat that caused them to shit so much, ultimately taking down the bridge.

The only way to stop the destruction of bridges by pidgeons is to increase gasoline tax $.02/gallon to feed pidgeons specially grown corn which causes the reduction of pidgeon body heat which will result in a substantial reduction of hot pidgeon shit thus reducing bridge failures.

The problem with the Tappan Zee bridge should easy to fix as we pay tolls on most of the bridges here but instead of using the money for bridge repair. We use it to subside mass transit. We the taxpayer of NY pay a tax on our gas already for the mta. Why not take this tax and use it on the bridges instead of subways. All along the East coast (except Conn and Mass.) Gas is between 2.49 -2.69 not 2.89. We pay enough. To leave Long Island it cost you at least 9-15 dollars in bridge tolls.

Why can't we do what they do in Europe? They build a bridge, they put a toll on it until the bridge has paid for itself, and they have enough money for maintenance... then the toll disappears.

Oh yeah, tolls are actually revenue for the state to waste on other things. Bridges could pay for themselves, if the money they brought in actually went BACK to the bridge.

Some years ago someone told me the reason N.Y.C.gasoline taxes are so high is because they use the money to repair bridges and roads and the whole inferstructure. When I found out the pols were funneling MY money into the rat hole they call the subway I was shocked! I assumed that they would be above board on this endevor! Subsadizing the subways and the MTA with MY money is unconsenable! Now the pols have another great idea! "lets tax the s**t out of them to fix the bridges"! We can then put their money to good use by putting it into the general fund! One of these days there is going to be a reconing , and you bastard politicians will be tar and feathered

We are also fortunate to pay taxes,(surcharge(s)) on our phone bills to also subsidize the MTA.

OH SURE RAISE THE GAS TAX,RAISE THE BRIDGES TOLLS,WHAT ELSE IS NEW. IF NEW YORK STATE HAD BEEN USING THE FEDERAL FUNDING IT RECEIVES ON ROADS AND BRIDGES INSTEAD OF USING THESE FUNDS FOR OTHER THINGS. EVERY POLITICAN SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM OFFICE AND PUT PEOPLE IN THERE THAT WILL DO THE JOB THEY ARE ELECTED TO DO. ITS ABOUT TIME WE GOT RID OF THE ASSHOLES THAT RUN OUR GOVERNMENTS.

Gee.. New York has about $.75 of tax on a gallon of gas already. Smart move. I am pretty sure New York is the highest in the nation of gasoine taxes. Why not add more? I lived in New York State for over 50 years. I got smart and left. The highest taxed state in the nation and proud of that. That's why people like me have left the state. Soon just the politican will live there and be proud of themselves.
