Mahalo for this article. It is good to know that the soldiers are getting the training needed. I was absolutely sure that the troops were prepared for their deployments-and the preparations to receive help when returning home. They deserve no less.
That brings up the matter of Makua. Is this not evident enough to the people of Hawaiii that Makua is NOT the only place to have live fire training? The attempts to make everyone believe that the troops would be unprepared if they could not train at Makua is just misinformation given to keep Makua within the grasp of the military....return the valley to the people of the westside as promised-promised even as far back as the ending of WWI!
The troops are getting what they need...for I dont know anyone that thinks otherwise. Get you morals and principles back in order. Lies and misinformation doesn't become you!!!

Afghanistan ... it has been called "the graveyard of empires" for good reason. Alexander the Great, the British, the USSR - all of them met bitter, expensive, humiliating fates there; the hubris of the US military assures that it is ready to experience the same. The greatest irony is that the taliban were nurtured into the force they became by the US when we recruited, funded, armed, trained and unleashed the mujahadeen with the hope that they would vanquish the Russians. Americans, who have replaced history with the instant replay, are blindly supporting the corporatists who crave the profits they gain from the wars and who are yet seeking to construct a TransAfghanistan oil pipeline. The Afghanis have a long and storied history of hostility towards outsiders and will be prepared to fight us out and wait us out even if it should take fifty years. Our Afghan proxies there are illiterate, often drug addled, and desert faster than replacements can be recruited. All the flag waving, rah-rah, hoo-rah cheerleading in the world cannot alter the reality that many of the US soldiers are gong to meet a terrible reality which had they studied history they might have been able to avoid. The worst thing is that the continued assassinations by unmanned aircraft, and the toll of collateral deaths of innocents will mark the US as cowardly and dishonorable killers as the world watches our folly unfold.

$1,000,000 per year per soldier and the u.s. government can't keep the schools and libraries open. The war is over, no one won. The u.s. lost, people, money, opportunities to improve life in the U.S. all due to W's lies.

Good luck to them. Veterans tell me that Obama has essentially tied their hands with PC Bull, and they will be operating at less than their full capacity.

Oh, good. Let's keep wasting more money on this pointless war. Screw our schools, screw our roads, screw our energy, screw our economy. Let's just send our boys to shoot up some brown people. What a stupid nation this is, and I'll jump at the chance to get out if I ever get it.

You should read this extensive NY Times article which provides significant insight to Obama's decision regarding Afghanistan. He didn't make this decision lightly, and he opened up the discussion to everyone to make sure he heard all the available information prior to settling on a plan.

The idea is to send in enough personnel to accomplish whatever needs to be done, then get out.

holy cow, the article is about your next door neighbors being deployed as American Soldiers into a hostile combative area, which the 44th President of our country elected with an overwhelmingly 52%, is sending. give them some respect and spray paint your personal political views on a more appropriate wall. to be more productive, instead of typing in this little text box, type a letter and send it off. i'll even help you: the white house, the governor's office, senate, and your local representative. AND if you really want to leave American soil - do it. there are thousands of Americans living outside of this country who are not affiliated with a government or military job.

... and that same $1 million will operate an aircraft carrier for just 24 hours.

GW Bush sent more than 4,000 soldiers to their death, thousands more are permanently disfigured or crippled, and $9 billion a month wasted on a small country led by a dictator who wasn't a threat to our national security.

In the process we strained political relations in the Middle East and unintentionally created a cadre of shadow warriors who will do their best to penetrate our country's security to strike fear at random.

Like you said, what a waste it was. And no one won.

I sure hope these soldiers believe in their cause because it'll be real hard if they come home disabled or dead because of something they didn't believe in. I personally don't believe in this pointless war but these people want to put their necks on the line for something they believe in I respect their decision.

Just don't be expecting me to show any gratitude to them or praise them as heros. They are not protecting this country, they are only inciting the enemy to want to bring even more destruction to this country.

If anyone thinks I'm only hiding behind a keyboard and being cowardly you have no idea what real courage is all about.

Don't fret about it, appreciation is not something a soldier expects fron silly-azzed know-nothing civilians that sit safely in the rear. I promise you no soldier will cry about you not appreciating what they do. Ask one.
